Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump's latest round of tariffs are set to take effect this week. Trump Sunday described those tariffs as a payback of sorts to countries who've placed tariffs on the US in the past.

The tariffs will far more generous than those countries were to us, meaning they will be kinder than those countries were to the United States of America over the decades.

Trump was speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One. He also said supporters are already asking him to run for a third term, that despite the 22nd Amendment, which says presidents can only be elected to two terms. The UK Meanwhile, is making a final attempt to avoid those tariffs that take effect this week. Vicki Barker reports from London.

Negotiations with the US have reportedly continued through the weekend. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is trying to win an exemption for the UK Arguing that unlike other countries, Britain has a relatively equal trading relationship with the U.S. starmer has repeatedly said he doesn't want a trade war, but now sources in his office who spoke to British media say the UK Will not hesitate to retaliate against US Tariffs if needed. Any such retaliatory tariffs could target entire sectors, such as heavy machinery or pharmaceuticals, or focus on specific products like Harley Davidson motorcycles. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is in Japan, where he announced an upgrade to the US Military command there. He called Japan an indispensable partner in the effort to deter China's growing assertiveness in the region. He also said both countries need to do more to strengthen their military capabilities. Vice President Vance says an energy truce between Russia and Ukraine is now working, but Russian forces are still attacking Ukrainian cities. NPR's Eleanor Beardsley has more.

Ukraine says a military hospital, shopping center and apartment buildings were all hit in Kharkiv, 150 miles south. The mayor of Dnipro called Friday nights drone attacks that killed four people there, the worst in three years of war. President Volodymyr Zelensky says intelligence reports suggest Russia is actually preparing offensives in the east and south in the coming weeks. Sunday, Russia's Defense Ministry said its forces had gained control over a new settlement in Ukraine's Donetsk region following an assault operation. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Kyiv.
