In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. President Trump is floating the idea of potentially serving a third term in the White House. But NPR's Tamara Keith reports. The U.S. constitution says no one can be elected more than twice to the office of the presidency.
Tamara Keith
The way he talks about a third term, it's like he's keeping his options open. He also said it is still quite early to be having these conversations. The 22nd Amendment bars a president from being elected to a third term. But there are some novel legal theories that have been floated. And while they are quite far fetched, the fact that Trump isn't dismissing it out of hand means it can't be ignored.

NPR's Jammer Keith reporting. Trump's close ally, billionaire Elon Musk, spoke last night in Wisconsin. He's trying to boost turnout in the state's Supreme Court election set for tomorrow. From member station wuwm, Chuck Kormbach reports. Musk is opposing the liberal candidate.
Chuck Kormbach
Musk contends if Circuit Judge Susan Crawford wins the election, liberals will keep control of the court. Then new congressional district maps favorable to Democrats would be drawn for two Wisconsin House seats held by Republicans. He says that would help Democrats gain control of the House next year and block Trump administration programs.

It's obviously important in the state of Wisconsin, but I think it could actually be important for the country as well and maybe for the world.
Chuck Kormbach
Musk and groups he supports have spent about $20 million helping Circuit Judge Brad Schimmel. Crawford says Schimmel is for sale and that she's made no promises about redrawing House seats. For NPR News, I'm Chuck Kwornbach in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

Meanwhile, media reports say Elon Musk is scheduled to visit the CIA today. The billionaire is in charge of President Trump's cost cutting effort. Doge Musk is expected to meet CIA Director John Ratcliffe to discuss efficiency. A French court has convicted far right leader Marine Le Pen of embezzling European Union funds. The ruling has major implications for her political future. As NPR's Rebecca Rossman reports, a judge has now barred Le Pen from seeking public office for five years.
Rebecca Rossman
Le Pen has long been a dominant figure in French politics as longtime leader of the nationalist anti immigration National Rally Party. But this conviction stems from accusations that she misused millions of dollars in EU funds to pay party staff while serving as a member of the European Parliament. She denies wrongdoing and plans to appeal, but the ruling remains in effect, likely barring her from the 2027 presidential race. Rebecca Rossman, NPR News, Paris.

Iran's president says his country is rejecting direct talks with the Trump administration over its nuclear weapons program. Trump suggested yesterday if there was no progress with Iran on its nuclear program, it might be bombed. Iran's supreme leader is also rejecting direct talks. This is npr. The National Weather Service warns powerful thunderstorms will spread from the Central Plains to the Southeast today. And tomor some of the storms could include tornadoes. There were reports of tornadoes yesterday in Missouri, Michigan and Tennessee. Wildfires in western North Carolina and South Carolina are still raging. They're fueled by the significant number of trees downed by Hurricane Helene last fall. But as Blue Ridge Public Radio's Laura Hackett reports, some weekend rain has helped dampen the fires.

After two weeks of bone dry weather, rain was a welcome reprieve for western North Carolina. Several wildfires remain large and active, but the rain helped lift evacuations for hundreds of households over the weekend, including for Charlotte Lovett, who lives in the small town of Saluda. Last week, a fire came within 300 yards of her house. She says the rainfall has felt glorious.

It's better than putting on the dancing music. It was so sweet, just great to have everything refreshed again. But hopefully there'll be more.

While conditions have eased in some places, drought conditions remain in much of the region. For NPR News, I'm Laura Hackett in Asheville, North Carolina.

SpaceX is scheduled to launch a private crewed mission from Cape Canaveral later today. The Fram2 mission is a little different. It'll be the first human spaceflight to circle the Earth's two poles. The crew will be in a low orbit. The team is led by cryptocurrency investor Chun wang, who paid SpaceX an undisclosed sum to lead the mission. I'm Korva Coleman, NPR News.

In a surprising revelation, President Donald Trump is reportedly contemplating the possibility of serving a third term in office. Despite the clear stipulations of the U.S. Constitution, specifically the 22nd Amendment—which limits presidential terms to two—Trump is discussing this option openly.

Tamara Keith highlights the constitutional barrier, stating, “The 22nd Amendment bars a president from being elected to a third term.” However, she notes that Trump is exploring "novel legal theories" to circumvent this restriction. While these theories are largely considered "far-fetched," the mere discussion indicates that the topic cannot be dismissed outright.

Elon Musk, a close ally of President Trump, is actively involved in Wisconsin's upcoming Supreme Court election. His efforts are part of a broader strategy to influence the political landscape in favor of conservative interests.

Musk is channeling approximately $20 million to support Circuit Judge Brad Schimmel against liberal candidate Susan Crawford. He argues that Crawford’s victory would ensure continued liberal control over the court, potentially leading to the redrawing of congressional district maps that favor Democrats. This redistricting could enable Democrats to gain control of the House in the next election cycle, thereby obstructing Trump administration programs.
An unnamed analyst commented, “It's obviously important in the state of Wisconsin, but I think it could actually be important for the country as well and maybe for the world” ([01:31]), underscoring the national implications of this local election interference.

In addition to his political engagements, Elon Musk is scheduled to meet with CIA Director John Ratcliffe today. As the head of President Trump’s cost-cutting initiatives, Musk’s meeting aims to discuss strategies for enhancing efficiency within the agency.

French far-right leader Marine Le Pen has been convicted by a French court for embezzling European Union funds. This ruling severely impacts her political career and future aspirations.

Rebecca Rossman reports that Le Pen, leader of the nationalist anti-immigration National Rally Party, was found guilty of misusing millions of euros intended for party staff during her tenure as a member of the European Parliament. Despite denying any wrongdoing, Le Pen plans to appeal the decision. Nevertheless, the current ruling bars her from seeking public office for five years, effectively removing her from the 2027 presidential race.

The Iranian government, represented by its president and supreme leader, has rejected President Trump's overtures for direct talks concerning Iran’s nuclear weapons program. This refusal comes amid escalating tensions, with Trump previously suggesting the possibility of military action if diplomatic negotiations fail.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings about powerful thunderstorms spreading from the Central Plains to the Southeast today, with potential tornadoes expected in some areas. Recent reports confirm tornadoes touched down in Missouri, Michigan, and Tennessee.

Laura Hackett provides an update on the ongoing wildfires in western North Carolina and South Carolina. These fires, exacerbated by the extensive tree loss from Hurricane Helene last fall, continue to burn fiercely. However, recent weekend rain has provided much-needed relief, reducing fire activity and lifting evacuations for hundreds of households.
One evacuee, Charlotte Lovett from Saluda, expressed gratitude for the rainfall, saying, “It was so sweet, just great to have everything refreshed again. But hopefully there'll be more” ([04:09]). Despite the easing conditions in some areas, drought persists across much of the region, posing ongoing challenges for firefighting efforts.

In an ambitious venture, SpaceX is set to launch the Fram2 mission from Cape Canaveral later today. This mission marks the first human spaceflight to orbit the Earth along both the North and South Poles, a significant milestone in space exploration.
The crew, led by cryptocurrency investor Chun Wang, will remain in a low Earth orbit throughout the mission. Chun Wang financed this groundbreaking endeavor by paying SpaceX an undisclosed sum, highlighting the increasing role of private investment in space missions.
