Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. President Trump is set to announce a new round of tariffs tomorrow. NPR's Tamara Keith with details.
Caroline Levitt
White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt says President Trump has made up his mind about the tariffs. This is obviously a very big day. He is with his trade and tariff team right now perfecting it to make sure this is a perfect deal for the American people and the American worker. Many economists are warning adding tariffs will hurt American businesses and raise prices for consumers. But Levitt dismissed those concerns, pointing to the strong economy during Trump's first term when he put high tariffs on China. Independent analysis found that those tariffs benefited some workers but harmed others, and US Consumers bore most of the cost. Levitt says the new tariffs will go into effect immediately. They'll tax groceries and food products. They'll tax building supplies at a time when home prices are too high already. They will tax fertilizer to our farmers. About 80% of the potash that is used by our farmers for fertilizer comes from Canada.

Kaine says his resolution has bipartisan support. He says the vote will now likely be held tomorrow because of a Senate floor speech, speech his colleague from New Jersey, Senator Cory Booker, has been giving for the last 20 plus hours to protest Trump's agenda. On the other hand, Matt McGuire says he voted for Crawford. There's some things coming up on the ticket here this year that are important and want to make sure she's in power there. Wisconsin's Supreme Court could weigh in on issues ranging from labor rights to congressional redistricting. Non partisan think tank the Brennan center for justice says this was the most expensive a state judge on record. For NPR News, I'm Joe Schultz in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

Florida Democrats believe they have a shot at picking up at least one of two congressional seats in play in today's special elections. Both were held by Republicans, former Congressman Mike Waltz and Matt Gaetz. In each race, a Democratic candidate has raised more money than the GOP rival. When it premiered in 1981, Merrily We Roll along was a flop. The story of three friends told backwards from middle aged disillusionment to youthful hope confused Broadway audiences, but the recent revival won the 2024 Tony Award and was a hit.

Tariff Announcement and White House Stance
President Donald Trump is poised to unveil a new series of tariffs, signaling a continued aggressive trade policy. According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt, the administration is meticulously finalizing the details to ensure the tariffs serve the "American people and the American worker" (00:42). Levitt emphasized the administration's confidence by stating, "This is obviously a very big day. He is with his trade and tariff team right now perfecting it to make sure this is a perfect deal for the American people and the American worker."
Economic Implications and Criticisms
Despite the White House's assurances, many economists warn that additional tariffs could negatively impact American businesses and lead to higher consumer prices. Levitt countered these concerns by referencing the robust economy during Trump's first term, attributing success to previously imposed high tariffs on China. However, independent analyses reveal a mixed impact, benefiting certain workers while disadvantaging others, with the majority of costs falling on U.S. consumers.
Resolution to Nullify Tariffs
Senate Democrats are mobilizing to vote on a resolution aimed at nullifying President Trump's emergency declaration for imposing tariffs on Canada. Democratic Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia voiced strong opposition, highlighting potential retaliatory measures from Canada (01:25).
Potential Retaliation and Bipartisan Support
Senator Kaine warned, "They'll tax groceries and food products. They'll tax building supplies at a time when home prices are too high already. They will tax fertilizer to our farmers. About 80% of the potash that is used by our farmers for fertilizer comes from Canada" (01:35). He also noted that the resolution enjoys bipartisan support and anticipates a Senate vote, spurred by sustained efforts from colleagues like Senator Cory Booker.
High-Stakes Judicial Race
Wisconsin voters are currently engaged in a pivotal state Supreme Court race between conservative Judge Brad Schimmel and liberal Judge Susan Crawford. This election is widely perceived as a referendum on President Trump and his associate, Elon Musk (01:50).
Voter Perspectives and Future Implications
Supporters of Schimmel, such as voter Connie Kehoe Purcell, praised his commitment to the Constitution, stating, "He's just a wonderful man, very committed to the Constitution" (02:31). Conversely, proponents of Crawford, like Matt McGuire, emphasized the importance of her leadership on critical issues. The outcome of this race could influence decisions on labor rights and congressional redistricting, with the Brennan Center for Justice noting it as the most expensive state judicial race on record.
Battling for Congressional Control
Florida Democrats are optimistic about capturing at least one of two Republican-held congressional seats in today's special elections. The seats currently held by former Congressman Mike Waltz and Matt Gaetz are the focal points (02:59).
Fundraising Advantages
In both contests, Democratic candidates have successfully raised more funds than their GOP rivals, positioning them advantageously in competitive races. This financial edge could be instrumental in swaying undecided voters and securing victories in traditionally Republican strongholds.
Incident Overview
A tragic accident occurred in Boston's Chinatown neighborhood when a box truck crashed into a building, resulting in at least six injuries (02:59).
Investigation and Aftermath
Initial reports depict the truck resting on its side, with authorities actively investigating the cause of the crash. Emergency services responded promptly, and those injured are receiving medical attention.
Devastating Earthquake Impact
A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar last Friday, claiming over 2,700 lives and causing widespread devastation (02:59). Amid the chaos, a 63-year-old woman was successfully pulled alive from the rubble, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the tragedy.
Rescue Efforts and Ongoing Challenges
Rescue teams continue to work diligently to locate and aid survivors, facing numerous obstacles due to the scale of destruction and aftershocks that complicate recovery operations.
Case Details and Legal Proceedings
The Justice Department is seeking the death penalty for Luigi Mangione, charged with the murder of healthcare executive Brian Thompson outside a New York City hotel in December (02:59).
Attorney General's Statement
Attorney General Pambani addressed the case, stating, "I gave the decision careful consideration" (04:25). Mangione has pleaded not guilty to charges in both New York and Pennsylvania, where he was apprehended, and awaits further legal proceedings.
Film Adaptation and Production Insights
A film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim's Broadway revival, "Merrily We Roll Along," featuring stars Jonathan Groff and Daniel Radcliffe, has been acquired by Sony Pictures Classics for a future release (04:25). This move aligns with a trend of bringing high-quality Broadway productions to wider audiences, similar to successful adaptations like "Hamilton" and "Waitress."
Historical Context and Future Projects
Originally premiering in 1981 to unfavorable reviews, the revival has achieved significant success, winning the 2024 Tony Award. Additionally, another version being directed by Richard Linklater, starring Paul Mescal, Ben Platt, and Beanie Feldstein, is currently in production, filmed in chronological order over 15 years.
