Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Nora Ram. President Trump says the US Military carried out a dramatic and risky rescue of the Air Force officer whose fighter jet was shot down over Iran. As NPR's Greg Myy reports, the wounded officer took cover in a mountainous area to avoid being captured.

President Trump said on Truth Social that dozens of planes took part in the operation to save the airmen after his F15 fighter jet was hit over western Iran on Friday. The plane's pilot was quickly rescued, but the weapons officer, an Air Force colonel, had to go into hiding. Trump wrote, quote, this brave warrior was behind enemy lines in the treacherous mountains of Iran. US Rescue aircraft came under fire but managed to reach the airmen and fly him out of the country. The Wall Street Journal reported that two planes taking part in the rescue were unable to fly out of Iran, so US Troops blew them up and and left on another aircraft. On this Easter Sunday, President Trump went on Truth Social this morning to threaten Iran in a profanity laden post. He said Tuesday will be power plant day and bridge day, repeating his threat to strike Iran's critical infrastructure if Iran doesn't reopen the Strait of Hormuz by his Monday deadline. Trump ended the post with Praise be to Allah. Israeli airstrikes have hit across Lebanon south and in the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut. Israel says it's targeting Iran backed Hezbollah militants who fired rockets across the border. NPR's Lauren Freire reports. Lebanon's government says at least 54 people were killed Saturday.

Easter services are mixed with funerals as Israel bombs Lebanon south and demolishes homes there. In the Christian village of Dibil, resident Maroon Yassif tells NPR they're under siege and being shelled. United nations peacekeepers say they've lodged a formal protest after Israeli soldiers destroyed security cameras outside a UN Base in southern Lebanon. Three UN Peacekeepers were killed last month and several have been wounded. Hezbollah says it used a missile against an Israeli warship off Lebanon's coast, but the Israeli military says it's not aware of that incident. In addition to ordering people out of the country's south, Israel's military is also ordering evacuation of Lebanon's main crossing with neighboring Syria, warning it may strike that area, too. Pope Leo celebrated his first Easter as pope today. He urged leaders to end the conflicts now raging around the world, that they must end every desire for domination and power. Unlike previous popes, he did not mention any specific war. He also offered brief easter greetings in 10 languages, including Arabic and Chinese and announced a hold of prayer vigil April 11. This is NPR News in Washington. Egypt says it's spoken to US And Iranian officials discuss the war in Iran. As Michael Koloki reports, the North African nation also announced an increase in local electricity prices, citing an energy crisis linked to the conflict.

Egypt said today that its foreign minister, Badr Abdelati, had had phone conversations with his regional counterparts, as well as US Middle east envoy Steve Witkoff and Iran's foreign minister, Abbas Arakchi, to discuss prop to de escalate the Iran war. The phone conversations follow Egypt's participation last weekend in talks with Pakistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia on the Iran conflict, which has also triggered a rise in global fuel costs. Egypt is among a list of several countries that say they have subsequently been forced to increase local fuel prices. It announced recently that it has increased electricity prices for commercial users and some residential consumers. For NPR News, I'm Michael Kaloki in Nairobi.

Hollywood studios and screenwriters reached an agreement yesterday on a new contract. It's for four years, a year longer than usual. The precise terms have not been disclosed. The Writers Guild issued a statement that the contract protects health care gains that were reached in 2023. The current contract expires June 30. The swift resolution of negotiations comes in stark contrast to the last round when Hollywood writers went on strike for months. In college basketball, UConn advanced to the men's championship game by be beating Illinois 71 62. Last night, Michigan beat Arizona, so we'll meet UConn for the title tomorrow night.
