Details@Capital1.com Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. U.S. and Israeli forces have rescued a U.S. air Force officer nearly two days after his plane was shot down in a mountainous region of Iran. President Trump celebrated the news and also issued a new threat. NPR's Mara Liasson reports.
C
Trump said the rescued officer sustained injuries but, quote, he will be just fine. This was the first time Iran has shot down a US Fighter jet since the war started. President Trump also issued a profane threat to Iran on Easter Sunday morning. He said starting Tuesday, the US Will bomb power plants and bridges if Iran doesn't open the Strait of Hormuz. The president has issued a series of contradictory statements on the strait, saying that it would open naturally when the war ends or that European countries should open the strait themselves. But it's hard to see how Trump can declare victory and end the war if the strait is still controlled by Iran. Mara liasson, NPR News, US and Israel.

The airstrike Sunday killed at least 25 people in Iran as the country's capital was pounded. One airstrike hit part of a university campus. Iran responded to the attacks, launching missiles towards Israel and Iran's Gulf neighbors. Pope Leo celebrated his first Easter Sunday as pope on a Sunny Day in St. Peter's Square. Claire Giangueve of the Religion News Service has more from Rome.
D
In his Easter address, Pope Leo said that peace cannot be achieved through weapons or threats at a time when political leaders in the United States and in Israel have employed religious language to justify the war in Iran. The the pope said that the Christian story is one of nonviolence. The pope also called on each individual to take action and not be desensitized by the suffering and death of others. Quoting his predecessor, Pope Francis, on April 11, he called for a prayer vigil for peace in St. Peter's Basilica to ask God to rid the world of wars and indifference. For NPR News, I'm Claire Giangrave.

Late Monday afternoon, the four astronauts on the Artemis II spacecraft will reach their destination, flying around the far side of the moon, conducting experiments, and then beginning their trip home with a splashdown in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego Friday. Dr. Laurie Glaze is the Deputy Associate Administrator for NASA's Exploration System. She says the flight is going very well.
E
Our mission continues to go incredibly well. Our crew is healthy as we prepare and gear up to fly by the moon, we're all extremely excited.

Late Sunday night, the spacecraft entered the lunar sphere of influence. That's the mathematical boundary where the moon's gravitational pull is stronger than Earth's. A NASA official called that a significant milestone in the mission. You're listening to NPR News from Washington. 5 European Finance Ministers are urging the bloc to consider introducing a windfall tax targeted towards energy companies who are increasing the price of oil and gasoline because of the U. S. Israeli war against Iran. Officials from Spain, Germany, Italy, Portugal and Austria are warning of market distortions that they say could drive up the cost of energy for homes and businesses. The proposal would be similar to one that was used in 2022 and the resulting energy crisis in Europe. After Russia invaded Ukraine, inflation in the European Union rose to 2.5% in March as Iran blocks the Strait of Hormuz. Hollywood playing host to some big family crowds this holiday weekend. NPR's Bob Mondello has more.
