Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. A big day for US House Speaker Mike Johnson moments ago reacting to the passage of a multi trillion dollar budget framework. It allows the GOP to begin the process of drafting legislation to enact key elements of President Trump's domestic agenda, such as tax cuts, energy and defense spending. Johnson also notes what won't be touched. The president has made clear Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid will not the blueprint passed by a vote of 216 to 214. The trade war between the US and China's escalated, neither major economy showing signs of backing down 84% tariffs on American goods, as much as 145% tariffs on Chinese imports. NPR's Franco Ordonez on President Trump's actions over the past week.

For weeks his team had insisted that Trump was going to hold the line. And then just days ago, Trump even wrote on social media in all capital letters, my policies will never change. And then clearly they did and they did so in another social media post, Trump also talked about concerns in the bond market. And then he kind of downplayed all those concerns and Trump and his aides basically painted this as being part of their strategy all along.

NPR's Franco Ordonio's a day after markets rallied on President Trump's announcement of a 90 day pause for most countries on the latest tariffs. At the opening bell, US Stocks were back in negative territory. See the Dow is now down more than 1,600 points or more than 4%. The S&P is down 4.8%. The Nasdaq down 5.5%. The suspension of tariffs is bringing some relief to small business owners. NPR's Windsor Johnston spoke to an entrepreneur in western North Carolina struggling to rebuild after Hurricane Helene.

Jesse Dean is the owner of the Asheville Tea Company. She says the on again, off again threat of tariffs is making it that much harder to rebuild her business from the ground up.
Franco Ordonez
Coming off the back of losing our entire facility during Hurricane Helene makes this particularly challenging because we are trying to replace lost equipment that was washed down the river. We already had debt because of COVID.
Windsor Johnston
The Trump administration says the use of tariffs will lead to a stronger trade relationship between the US and international powers. However, the DUT could force small business owners to either absorb the price hikes, pass them on to consumers or risk going under. Windsor Johnston, NPR News.

The Dow now down more than 1,700 points, or 4.2%, at 38,895. The Nasdaq is down 5.7%. The S&P has fallen nearly 5%. It's NPR News. The Israeli military is dismissing some reservists for signing a petition demanding the return of hostages held by Hamas and an end to the war in Gaza. Here's NPR's Hadil Al Shalchi.
Hadil Al Shalchi
The letter signed by hundreds of Israeli reservists and retired Air force members, accused the Israeli government of serving its own political gains and ignoring Israel's security interests. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the signatories a, quote, radical fringe group and accused them of strengthening Israel's enemies during wartime. The Israeli military's chief of staff dismissed the reservists despite their letter not calling for a refusal to serve. Israel says military pressure is needed to strike a better deal with Hamas for the release of the hostages. But polls show that nearly 70% of Israelis said they do not trust their government and want to complete a deal. Hadil Al Shalchi, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

New research suggests given the right training, artificial intelligence therapy bots can deliver effective mental health care. Here's NPR's Katie Riddle.

There are already a lot of AI therapists on the market, but many aren't effective and some are even dangerous. Researchers at Dartmouth College decided to train a bot over five years, years in therapeutic best practice. Nick Jacobson is a clinical psychologist who worked on this effort. He says with a therapy bot, no appointments are necessary.
Franco Ordonez
You can access it anywhere, anytime, which is dramatically different from how regular care would be provided, which is, you know, once a week in a defined, defined time and place.
Katie Riddle
Researchers say it will be some time before the tested therapy bot is widely available. Katie Arrettle, NPR News.
