In Washington, I'm Lakshmi Singh. U.S. stocks have resumed their downward slide as investors tr to assess the fallout from President Trump's trade war. NPR's Scott Horsley reports. While the president has temporarily suspended some tariffs, import taxes on goods from China are going sky high.
Scott Horsley
Investors cheered on Wednesday when President Trump paused many of his tariffs. But as economists dig into the numbers, they've concluded that the remaining tariffs could still be a big drag on trade and economic activity. In particular, goods from China could more than double in price. That prospect has investors discounting a new report from the Labor Department that showed inflation cooling more than expected last month.

NPR's Scott Horsley. We see the Dow is down nearly 1900 points, or 4.5%. The S&P 500 down more than 5%. The Nasdaq's off more than 6%. Now President Trump says the tariffs are the right way to go.
Donald Trump
We think we're in very good shape. We think we're doing very well. Again, there'll be a transition cost and transition problems, but in the end it's going to be, it's going to be a beautiful thing.

Trump during a meeting with his Cabinet earlier, he was handed a victory. House Republicans narrowly approved a major priority for the president, a budget resolution that unlocks the process Republicans need to enact much of the president's domestic policy agenda. Here's NPR's Barbara Sprunt.

The passage comes after the initial vote was delayed because of a critical mass of opposition from within the House Republican Conference. More than a dozen members had expressed concerns that the measure before them didn't do enough to address the deficit. Congressional leadership with members overnight and continued negotiations into the morning. Now that the budget blueprint has been adopted by the House and the Senate, Republicans in both chambers will begin the heavy lift of writing and getting support for a multi trillion dollar package that would extend the 2017 tax cuts and adjust military, energy and border spending. Medicare, Medicaid will not take a hit. However, Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries counters that GOP leaders are pursuing a $1.5 trillion spending cut that the Congressional Budget Office affirmed can only be achieved by targeting entitlement programs.

The only way to achieve that level of spending cut, $1.5 trillion, is to gut Medicaid along with Supplemental Nutritional Assistance and a whole host of other things that will harm the American people.

Hakeem Jeffries, addressing reporters earlier today, we see on Wall street, the dow is down 975 points, 2.4%, the S&P has fallen more than 3% and the Nasdaq down 3.8%. This is NPR News. Israel's military seizing larger areas of Gaza and turning them into expanded buffer zones. NPR's Aya Batawi reports. The entire southern region of Gaz could be next.
Aya Batawi
Defense Minister Israel Katz toured Gaza's southern region of Rafah and met with soldiers there. He told them the military is turning all of Rafah into a security zone. That would mean seizing a fifth of Gaza and cutting the territory off entirely from its border with Egypt. The city of Rafah has already been ordered evacuated by the military as part of a lethal ground offensive that's killed Palestinian civilians. The military says it's pursuing Hamas infrastructure and fighters. Israeli Professor Yaakov Garb at Ben Gurion University has examined the military's public maps showing their buffer zones across Gaza, and based on his analysis, says more than half of Gaza's territory is now inaccessible to Palestinians who are being squeezed into small enclaves.
