Donald Trump
Everybody wants to come and make a deal and we're working with a lot of different countries and it's all going to work out very well. I think it's going to work out really very well, but we're in good shape. There's no inflation. There's very little inflation.

Well, stocks lost ground today despite a better than expected report on inflation. NPR Scott Horsley reports. Investors are worried that President Trump's trade war could push prices higher in the months to come.
Scott Horsley
President Trump suspended steep new tariffs on goods from many countries this week, but he ordered even higher tariffs on goods from China. Economists say the net result is still a substantial burden that will be borne by US Consumers as the tariffs lead to higher prices in the months to come. The trade war with China is heating up just as price pressures in the US had been easing. Annual inflation fell to 2.4% last month thanks in part a steep drop in gasoline prices. Egg prices continue to climb in March as farmers try to rebuild laying flocks that were hard hit this winter by avian flu. With Easter just around the corner, egg prices are up about 60% from this time last year. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

In the lab, giving fish anti anxiety medication makes them more antisocial and prone to take risks. But scientists haven't been sure whether wild fish respond in the same way. New research in the journal Science suggests that they can. Atlantic salmon exposed to anxiety medication on a migratory journey were actually more successful in reaching their destination. Researchers say the meds could be making the fish more bold when crossing dams, a change in behavior that likely would cause problems in other contexts. Jonathan Lambert, NPR News.

NPR News Now: Detailed Summary of April 10, 2025 Episode
On April 10, 2025, NPR’s “News Now” delivered a comprehensive update on the latest national and international developments. Hosted by Lakshmi Singh, the episode covered a spectrum of topics ranging from economic policies and international diplomacy to environmental concerns and major sporting events. Below is a detailed summary of the key points discussed in the episode, structured into clear sections for ease of understanding.
Stock Market Performance: The episode opened with a report on the U.S. stock markets, which ended the day deep in negative territory. This decline erased much of the previous day's historic recovery.
President Trump's Tariffs Policy: Lakshmi Singh reported that President Donald Trump defended his tariffs policy amidst the market downturn. Trump optimistically stated, “Everybody wants to come and make a deal and we're working with a lot of different countries and it's all going to work out very well. I think it's going to work out really very well, but we're in good shape. There's no inflation. There's very little inflation.” ([00:40])
Investor Concerns: Despite a better-than-expected inflation report, stocks dipped as investors grew apprehensive that Trump’s escalating trade war, particularly with China, could lead to higher consumer prices in the future. Scott Horsley elaborated, “Economists say the net result is still a substantial burden that will be borne by US consumers as the tariffs lead to higher prices in the months to come.” ([01:06])
Inflation and Commodity Prices: Annual inflation had fallen to 2.4% last month, partly due to a significant drop in gasoline prices. However, egg prices surged by approximately 60% from the previous year as farmers worked to rebuild flocks decimated by avian flu over the winter. This price hike came just before Easter, exacerbating consumer concerns.
Bridget Brink’s Departure: The U.S. ambassador to Ukraine, Bridget Brink, is set to leave her post after three years of service during Russia’s full-scale invasion. Michelle Kellerman reported, “Bridget Brink has served as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine throughout Russia's full scale invasion.” ([02:02])
Administration’s Stance: State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce confirmed Brink's return, emphasizing the Trump administration’s efforts to secure a ceasefire. When questioned about whether Brink faced pressure not to condemn Russian attacks, Bruce responded, “She wasn't aware of any such instructions.” Furthermore, she stated, “The Trump administration is trying to end the war and the US will know soon if Russia is serious about diplomacy.” ([02:14])
Remarks on Brink’s Service: Scott Horsley commended Brink’s performance, saying, “During a time of war for those three years, an extraordinary performance there, and we wish her well.” ([02:14])
Passing the Budget Plan: House Republicans narrowly passed a key budget blueprint, marking the commencement of drafting a multitrillion-dollar bill aimed at enacting President Trump’s domestic priorities. These priorities include substantial tax cuts, increased defense spending, and stricter immigration restrictions.
Incident Report: A helicopter crashed into New York City's Hudson River, prompting immediate responses from emergency services. The New York City Police Department confirmed the crash on social media platform X, advising of emergency vehicle presence and traffic delays in the area. As of the report, there was no official information regarding the identities of those on board or the cause of the crash.
Environmental Impact Study: Jonathan Lambert reported on alarming new research indicating that pharmaceutical pollution is increasingly contaminating global rivers and streams, with significant effects on salmon migration. The study published in the journal Science revealed that Atlantic salmon exposed to anti-anxiety medications exhibited altered behaviors, making them more successful in reaching their migratory destinations. However, this behavioral change, characterized by increased boldness when crossing dams, could lead to ecological issues in other contexts.
Research Findings: “In the lab, giving fish anti anxiety medication makes them more antisocial and prone to take risks. But scientists haven't been sure whether wild fish respond in the same way,” Lambert explained. The research suggests that pharmaceutical contaminants can have profound and unexpected impacts on wildlife behavior and ecosystem dynamics.
Tournament Overview: The Masters Tournament commenced at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, featuring a record field of 95 players, the largest in a decade. Among the competitors was defending champion Scottie Scheffler, who has the potential to become the youngest player since Jack Nicklaus to win three Masters titles.
Jack Nicklaus’ Prediction: Legendary golfer Jack Nicklaus expressed his confidence in Rory McIlroy’s chances, stating, “This would be McIlroy's year to clinch a Masters title for a career Grand Slam.” Nicklaus, a six-time Masters champion, shared that he had met with McIlroy the previous week to offer strategic advice specific to Augusta National’s unique challenges.
Daily Market Closure: Wrapping up the episode, Lakshmi Singh detailed the stock market’s closing figures. The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted by over 1,000 points (2.5%) to finish the day at 39,593. Similarly, the S&P 500 declined by 188 points, and the Nasdaq experienced a drop of more than 4%.
