The EU was planning to target $23 billion of US imports, including fruit, wood, soybeans, copper and motorbikes in three different waves. But it has paused its counter tariffs after President Trump dropped his 20% increase on almost all EU goods. A 10% baseline tariff remains on all imports to the United States. The EU wants to pursue talks with the Trump administration to avoid an all out trade war. We want to give negotiations a chance, said Ursula von der Leyen, European Commission president. On X. She added, if negotiations are not satisfactory, the EU's countermeasures will kick in. Eleanor Beardsley, NPR News, Paris.

Pregnancy related Deaths in the U.S. are on the rise over a five year period. NPR's Selena Simmons Duffin reports. The maternal mortality rate in the US Was already higher than other wealthy countries.

What is the pattern of pregnancy related deaths in the US that was the question researchers at the National Institute of Health, along with colleagues at Harvard, set out to answer. They used national data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to find all pregnancy related deaths among women between age 15 and 54 from the year 2018 to 2022. They looked at deaths that occurred during pregnancy or within one year of the end of pregnancy from any cause related to or aggravated by the pregnancy. The results, published this week in JAMA Network Open, show the rate increased nationally over that time from 25 deaths per 100,000 births to 32 deaths per 100,000 births. A305 from Spain along with a pilot of a sightseeing helicopter were killed today after the chopper appears to have broken apart in midair, plunging into the Hudson River. The bodies of the victims have been recovered. You're listening to npr. The iconic Masters golf tournament is underway at Augusta national, the 89th edition of the tournament featuring 95 players, making it the largest field in 10 years. All of the attention, though, is on two players, defending champ Scottie Shuffler and Rory McIlroy. Scheffler got off to a quick start playing the first nine and three under. McElroy is being watched because a Masters green jacket would compete a career grand slam. Pharmaceutical pollution is increasingly contaminating rivers and streams around the globe. NPR's Jonathan Lambert reports. New research suggests pollution could alter salmon migration.

In the lab, giving fish anti anxiety medication makes them more antisocial and prone to take risks. But scientists haven't been sure whether wild fish respond in the same way. New research in the journal Science suggests that they can. Atlantic salmon exposed to anxiety medication on a migratory journey were actually more successful in reaching their destination. Researchers say the meds could be making the fish more bold when crossing dams, a change in behavior that likely would cause problems in other contexts. Jonathan Lambert, NPR News.

Note to self, do not try to cash in old chips from an out of date business casino, especially if they turn out to have been stolen. This was a decision earlier this month from an appellate court in New Jersey. The court ruled a man who purchased nearly 60,000 in chips from a casino in an online auction could not redeem them. The chips from the former Playboy Hotel and Casino were apparently pilfered by an employee of the company who was supposed to destroy them. European leaders have halted their planned retaliatory sanctions against the United States following a significant development in trade negotiations. This pause comes in the wake of President Donald Trump's announcement of a 90-day suspension on a second round of tariffs targeting dozens of countries, including the European Union (EU).
Eleanor Beardsley reports that the EU had intended to impose tariffs amounting to $23 billion on various U.S. imports such as fruit, wood, soybeans, copper, and motorbikes across three distinct waves. The suspension of these countermeasures follows President Trump’s decision to retract a previous 20% tariff increase on almost all EU goods, maintaining a baseline tariff of 10% on all imports into the United States.

Alarmingly, the United States has witnessed an increase in pregnancy-related deaths over a five-year span, exacerbating concerns over maternal healthcare. The maternal mortality rate in the U.S. has consistently been higher compared to other affluent nations, prompting urgent investigations.
Researchers from the National Institute of Health, in collaboration with Harvard colleagues, delved into national data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). They scrutinized all pregnancy-related deaths among women aged 15 to 54 between 2018 and 2022. The study focused on deaths occurring during pregnancy or within one year postpartum, attributable to causes related to or aggravated by the pregnancy.
The findings, published in this week’s JAMA Network Open, reveal that the maternal mortality rate rose from 25 deaths per 100,000 births in 2018 to 32 deaths per 100,000 births in 2022. This upward trend underscores the critical need for improved maternal healthcare services and interventions to address this public health crisis.

Experiments conducted in laboratory settings revealed that exposure to anti-anxiety medications causes fish to become more antisocial and take greater risks. Extending these findings to wild populations, the research published in the journal Science indicates that Atlantic salmon exposed to such medications during their migratory journeys actually fare better in reaching their destinations. However, the increased boldness may lead to unintended consequences, such as higher mortality rates when crossing dams or encountering predators, thereby disrupting ecological balances.

A noteworthy legal decision emerged from New Jersey, where an appellate court ruled against a man who attempted to cash in nearly 60,000 casino chips purchased from an online auction. These chips originated from the former Playboy Hotel and Casino in Atlantic City, which operated between 1981 and 1984.
The court determined that the chips were illicitly obtained, having been stolen by an employee tasked with their destruction. Consequently, the purchaser was denied the ability to redeem the chips, underscoring the legal complexities surrounding the resale of casino memorabilia and the enforcement of property rights.
