The White House is pressuring thousands of migrants deemed to be in the US without legal status to self deport by revoking their Social Security numbers. That means cutting off people's access to employment, bank accounts and other basic financial services. The administration confirms its use of a tactic that includes placing the names of living immigrants to Social Security's death master file, which had long been used to ID recipients who should no longer get benefits because they're dead. But critics say the latest enforcement is extreme. They warn US Citizens and others legally residing in the US could also be swept up. The administration's already accused of mistakenly deporting a number of people to Central America last month, including a Maryland man the White House admits was deported as a result of an administrative error. White House envoy Steve Witkoff's in Russia for meetings with top Kremlin officials, including Russian President Vladimir Putin, visit unannounced. Putin hosted Wykoff on the sidelines of a working trip to Russia's second largest city of St. Petersburg. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov played down the chances of a breakthrough on the Ukraine issue, but said it was an opportunity for both sides to clarify their positions and discuss a possible future meeting between the two leaders. Putin rejected an earlier Trump backed ceasefire proposal, instead laying out conditions for peace that critics say amount to Ukraine's de facto capitulation. In turn, Trump is warned he may resort to secondary sanctions on Russian oil exports if he feels Putin is dragging out negotiations while trying to improve Russia's position on the battlefield. The bill's Republican sponsors hope for a different outcome this time around, given the court's 6 to 3 majority of GOP appointees. But not all Republicans support the measure. Several join Democrats in voting no, like Tennessee Senator Todd Gardenhire.
