Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. Two U.S. navy ships have crossed the Strait of Hormuz. NPR's Franco Ordonez reports on U.S. efforts to reopen the channel that's critical to commercial shipping.

The passage of the guided missile destroyers marks the first transit of American warships since the start of the war six weeks ago, according to U.S. central Command. The USS Frank E. Peterson and USS Michael Murphy are part of a broader mission to ensure the strait is fully clear of mines previously laid by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard. U.S. officials say additional forces, including underwater drones, will join the effort in the coming days. The reopening of the strait is a key US Condition of the ceasefire. The waterway is critical to the global economy, accounting for about 20% of the world's oil supply. Franco Ordonez, NPR News.

Vice President Vance is leading a US Delegation of face to face talks with Iran in Pakistan today to end the U. S Israeli war in Iran. This after President Trump backed down from threats to bomb Iran's power plants, instead agreeing to a temporary ceasefire. Thousands have died in the violence, mostly in Iran and Lebanon, and the global economy has been damaged. NPR's Dia Hadid has more from Islamabad.

The ceasefire that was announced last Tuesday has been shaky from the get go over disagreement about whether it includes Lebanon, where there's been fighting between the Iranian proxy Hezbollah and Israel. Now what we're hearing today is that the Lebanese and the Israelis are going to speak directly. So potentially we have another historic outcome from this 43 day war.

Democratic leaders are calling on Congressman Eric Swalwell to end his bid for governor of California following allegations made by a former staffer that he sexually assaulted her. NPR has not independently verified the allegation, which was first published in the San Francisco chronicle and on CNN. NPR's Elena Moore has more.

Several women have accused him of sexual misconduct. California's primary is set for June, and Swalwell was seen as a frontrunner in the race. Now his standing in Congress is also uncertain. In a statement, House Democratic leaders stopped short of calling for his resignation, but demanded he end his gubernatorial campaign and that there be a, quote, swift investigation. The agency says it doesn't expect additional airspace closures will be needed. Earlier this year, the FAA shut down parts of Texas airspace twice after the lasers were deployed. And airspace over El Paso's airport was also closed for lasers. The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is underway near Palm Springs, California. NPR's Isabella Gomez Sarmiento reports. g. More than 100 artists will perform at Coachella this weekend and next. The Southern California Music Festival, which has been running for more than 25 years, is one of the hottest tickets of the festival season. This year. Many beliebers, fans of the pop star Justin Bieber are sure to tune in. Saturday night will mark his first major concert since the cancellation of his justice tour in 2022. There are other big names in store, too. Rock star Jack White was a last minute addition to the lineup. The English indie band the XX is reuniting this year for the first time since 2018. And the Colombian star Carol G will make history on Sunday night as the first Latina to ever headline the festival. Isabella Gomez Sarmiento, NPR News.
