In Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Apple and other tech companies are breathing a sigh of relief after President Trump announced that smartphones and other electronics will be exempted from new tariffs. And NPR's Bobby Allen reports. The tech industry had been bracing itself for a major shock.
Bobby Allen
U.S. customs and Border Protection published tariff exclusions late Friday that includes smartphones, laptops, memory chips and machines that create semiconductors. Fear of a sudden spike in the price of iPhones sent some customers rushing to buy new devices. And Apple chartered a cargo plane from India to fly 600 tons of iPhones out to avoid the new levies. But Apple and Nvidia, two of the most valuable companies in the world, have for now won a reprieve. The Trump administration has pushed tech companies to manufacture more electronics in the U.S. but executives say the cost of labor, advanced supply chains abroad along with hyper specialized workers would make moving production to the US in some cases nearly impossible. Delegations from the United States and Iran are scheduled to resume talks in oman this week. NPR's Greg Myhre reports. The two sides met on Saturday to discuss Tehran's advancing nuclear program.
Greg Myhre
This was just a get acquainted session. The sides are late laying out some basics, a framework for the talks, and we know the key issues here. What will the limits be on Iran's nuclear program? And to what extent will Iran get relief from the tough sanctions imposed by the U.S. but the mere fact that they met is certainly something unusual. And the White House called the talks, quote, positive and constructive. Iran struck a similar tone, and they agreed to meet again in a week.

That's NPR's Greg Myhre reporting. The final round in Ecuador's presidential race will be decided today. Voters are set to choose between the conservative incumbent and a leftist challenger as the country deals with devastating violence. NPR's Carrie Kahn reports. International drug gangs are fighting over control of lucrative cocaine routes to the US And Europe, leaving Ecuador with an unprecedented homicide rate.
Carrie Kahn
The first two months of this year saw the homicide rate soar, with one killing occurring every hour. The current president, Daniel Noboa, Trump ally and son of one of the wealthiest men in Ecuador, has taken an iron fist approach to cracking down on the gangs. But several abuses by soldiers fighting crime groups and the rising violence have hurt his approval ratings. His challenger, Luisa Gonzalez, a protege of Ecuador's former leftist firebrand president, also advocates for a large military role, but she wants more spending on social programs and poverty relief. In the first round of the presidential contest, both candidates received about 44% of the vote. Polls show this round will be as close. Kerry Kahn, NPR News, Guayaquil, Ecuador.

This is NPR News. With one round to go at the Masters in Augusta, Georgia, Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy has a two stroke lead. Steve Futterbin reports. He's trying to finally capture the one major tournament he's never won.
Steve Futterman
When Rory McIlroy began the third round.
Windsor Johnston
Four, please.
Greg Myhre
Rory McIlroy, now driving, there was no.
Steve Futterman
Way he could know what was about to happen. On the first five holes, McIlroy could do no wrong. He had three birdies and an eagle. He picked up five strokes, moved in front and never lost the lead. Now with 18 holes left, McIlroy leads American Bryson DeChambeau by two strokes. McElroy hoping to win the Masters and become only the sixth golfer to win all four major championships, the Grand Slam.
Greg Myhre
I think I still have to remind myself that there's a long way to go. I just as much as anyone else know what can happen on the final.
Steve Futterman
Day here in 2011. McIlroy led with just nine holes left, then imploded and finished in 15th place. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman at the Masters in Augusta.
