Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Luis Schiavone. El Salvador's President Nayib Bukele meets with President Trump at the White House today. His now a key player in the Trump administration's tough line on people in the US without legal status. In one high profile case, the Trump administration has not yet provided a federal judge with additional information on a man wrongly deported to El Salvador. NPR's Chandelyse Duster reports that's despite a Supreme Court order that the administration help return Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the U.S. nPR's Chandelyse Duster has more.

A Department of Homeland Security official wrote in a court filing on Sunday that there are, quote, no updates for the court on Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. A State Department official has said Abrego Garcia is alive and secure in El Salvador's terrorism confinement center. Justice Department lawyers also argued in a separate filing Sunday that a federal court cannot compel the executive branch to engage with the Salvadoran government to facilitate his return. NPR has reached out to Abrego Garcia's attorneys for comment. They previously said the government, quote, must act without further delay to ensure his safe return. Duster, NPR News.

As President Trump's tariffs policies evolve, the world is watching for next steps. The president says he expects eventual tariffs on semiconductors, although the administration announced at the end of last week it would temporarily exclude electronic goods like smartphones, computers and semiconductor chips, items made or assembled in China. Richard Haass, president emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, says America's trading partners are standing by for possible trade offs.
Richard Haass
Famous for, quote, unquote, the art of the deal. But you can always get a deal if you're prepared to compromise. And the fact that these tariffs have been put on and already there's lots of walking back creates the impression that if the United States is forced to pay a price for its policy, it will back off.

China has levied retaliatory tariffs of 125% on American goods. NPR's Scott Horsley looks at Wall street, where stocks opened sharply higher.
Scott Horsley
Stock in Apple jumped sharply on news of the tariff exclusion, which came out late. Commerce Ministry calls it a small step in the right direction. Even that small step may not last, however. President Trump and his commerce secretary say electronic products could be hit with new tariffs as part of a future crackdown on imported semiconductors. The ongoing trade war has prompted OPEC to lower its forecast for oil demand both this year and next. Retail gasoline prices have been falling in recent days. AAA reports the average price of regular gas is now $3.18 a gallon. That's down about 7 cents from a week ago, but 10 cent than this time last month. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

The dow is up 387 points, the NASDAQ up 263. This is NPR News. The sightseeing helicopter tour company whose chopper fatally crashed into New York's Hudson river last Thursday is shutting down operations immediately. The Federal Aviation Administration made the announcement this weekend. A family of five visiting from Spain and the pilot all died at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, Sunday. History was made as Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy became only the sixth person to capture golf's Grand Slam. Steve Putterman reports.
Steve Futterman
For more than a decade, Rory McIlroy had been trying and falling short of winning the Masters, the only one of the four major tournaments he hadn't won. On Sunday, he did it in a roller coaster final round. Twice McIlroy had the lead, then lost it. And on the final hole, he missed an easy putt that would have clinched the win. That forced a sudden death playoff, which McIlroy did win. He admitted there were lots of bumps.
Rory McIlroy
I didn't make it easy today. I was nervous. It was one of the toughest days I've ever had on the golf course.
Steve Futterman
When McElroy made the winning putt, he sank to his knees and began to cry. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman. In Augusta, Georgia.

Meeting Between Presidents Trump and Bukele
At [00:23], host Luis Schiavone reports on a significant meeting at the White House between U.S. President Donald Trump and El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele. This meeting underscores Bukele's emerging role in the Trump administration's stringent immigration policies, particularly concerning individuals without legal status in the United States.
Kilmar Abrego Garcia Deportation Case
Chandelyse Duster provides an in-depth look at the high-profile case of Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia. Despite a Supreme Court order mandating the Trump administration to facilitate his return to the U.S., as reported at [00:58], the Department of Homeland Security has not provided the necessary information to the federal judge handling the case. A State Department official confirmed that Garcia is alive and securely held in El Salvador’s terrorism confinement center. In a separate filing, Justice Department lawyers contended that the executive branch cannot be legally compelled to collaborate with the Salvadoran government for Garcia’s repatriation. Garcia’s attorneys have emphasized the urgency, stating, "the government must act without further delay to ensure his safe return." As of the latest update, NPR has reached out to his legal representatives for further comments.
Evolving Tariff Policies
At [01:38], Schiavone discusses President Trump’s evolving tariff strategies, with a particular focus on the administration’s recent decision to temporarily exclude electronic goods—such as smartphones, computers, and semiconductor chips—from tariffs imposed on Chinese imports. Richard Haass, President Emeritus of the Council on Foreign Relations, offers his perspective at [02:07], stating, "You can always get a deal if you're prepared to compromise. And the fact that these tariffs have been put on and already there's lots of walking back creates the impression that if the United States is forced to pay a price for its policy, it will back off."
China’s Retaliatory Measures and Market Reactions
Following the exclusion announcement, China imposed retaliatory tariffs of 125% on American goods. Scott Horsley reports at [02:24] that Wall Street responded positively, with stocks like Apple experiencing sharp gains. However, he notes that these concessions might be temporary as the U.S. administration hints at future tariffs targeting semiconductors. Additionally, the ongoing trade war has influenced OPEC to reduce its oil demand forecasts for the current and next year. Concurrently, retail gasoline prices have seen a decline, with the average price of regular gas dropping to $3.18 per gallon—a decrease of approximately 7 cents from the previous week and 10 cents compared to last month, as reported by AAA.
Market Performance
The stock market reflected these developments positively, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average rising by 387 points and the NASDAQ increasing by 263 points, indicating investor optimism amidst the tariff adjustments.
Helicopter Crash in New York
Tragically, a sightseeing helicopter operated by a New York-based company crashed into the Hudson River last Thursday, resulting in the immediate shutdown of the company’s operations, as announced by the Federal Aviation Administration over the weekend. The crash claimed the lives of a Spanish family of five and the pilot, all of whom were attending the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia.
Rory McIlroy's Historic Victory at the Masters
Steve Futterman details Rory McIlroy’s remarkable achievement at [03:14], where the Northern Irish golfer became only the sixth person to secure golf’s prestigious Grand Slam. After years of near misses, McIlroy triumphed in a dramatic final round marked by fluctuating leads. On the final hole, he missed an easy putt, triggering a sudden-death playoff which he ultimately won. Reflecting on his performance, McIlroy admitted at [04:19], "I didn't make it easy today. I was nervous. It was one of the toughest days I've ever had on the golf course." His emotional victory was evident as he sank the winning putt, knelt down, and cried, signifying the culmination of over a decade of perseverance.
Reunion of Myrtle the Tortoise
In a lighter piece, Schiavone shares the story of Myrtle, a pet tortoise who was separated from his family during a severe tornado that devastated parts of Mississippi Myrtle in mid-March. After disappearing amidst fallen trees, Myrtle was found injured weeks later by a neighbor. He was subsequently taken to the Central Mississippi Turtle Rescue, where Tiffany Emmanuel and her family have been diligently caring for him. The tortoise has now been successfully reunited with his family, bringing relief and joy to all involved.
