In Washington, I'm Louise Schiavone. Lawyers for the Federal Trade Commission and Meta will be delivering opening statements today in a trial that's expected to last two months. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and former Chief operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg are set to take the witness stand. NPR's Bobby Allen has details.
Bobby Allen
The case is centered on whether Meta's acquisition of Instagram and WhatsApp violated competition laws years before the purchases. Zuckerberg wrote in an internal email quote, it is better to buy than compete. The FTC says Meta became dominant only after competing unfairly to box out rivals and should be forced to break up Instagram and WhatsApp into separate companies. Meta says regulators approved the takeover of Instagram and WhatsApp more than a decade ago and that the FTC is punishing Meta for its Dozens of witnesses will testify under oath, including Zuckerberg, who is expected to take the stand for seven hours. Zuckerberg has lobbied the Trump administration for the case to be dropped. It was originally filed during Trump's first term. Bobby Allen, NPR News.

President Trump says he expects a tariff eventually will be levied on semiconductors. He spoke to reporters on Air Force One, returning to Washington from Mar a Lago.
Donald Trump
But the tariffs will be in place in the not distant future because, as you know, like we did with steel, like we did with automobiles, like in with aluminum, which are now fully on, we'll be doing that with semiconductors, with chips and numerous other things, and that'll take place in the very near future.

The US had levied 145% import taxes on Chinese goods, but the administration announced at the end of last week that it would temporarily exclude electronic goods like smartphones, computers and semiconductor chips, items made or assembled in China. China has levied retaliatory tariffs of 125% on American. Earlier today, South Korea's former President Yun Sung Yol appeared in court for the start of a trial on charges of insurrection after the country's Constitutional Court removed Yoon from office earlier this month. NPR's Anthony Kuhn has the latest.
Anthony Kuhn
In court, prosecutors argued that Yun had led an insurrection by declaring martial law last December 3rd and then sent troops to Parliament to prevent lawmakers from voting down his decree. Yoon has denied this, but one of the witnesses is a former military officer who testified during Yoon's impeachment trial that he was ordered to physically drag lawmakers out of Parliament. The pre trial hearing for Yoon's insurrection case took place before he was removed from office, making him the first South Korean sitting president to face criminal charges. If convicted, Yoon could face death or life in prison. Presidential elections to replace Yoon are scheduled for June 3rd. Anthony Kuhn, NPR News. Seoul.

World markets, Asian markets and European traders all saw gains. Dow futures are expected to open at least 200 points higher. This is NPR News in Washington. The sightseeing helicopter tour company whose chopper fatally crashed into New York's Hudson river last Thursday is shutting down operations immediately. The Federal Aviation Administration made the announcement Sunday. A family of five visiting from Spain and the pilot all died at the Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, Sunday. History was made as Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy became only the sixth person to capture golf's Grand Slam. Steve Futterman reports.
Steve Futterman
For more than a decade, Rory McIlroy had been trying and falling short of winning the Masters, the only one of the four major tournaments he hadn't won. On Sunday, he did it in a roller coaster final round. Twice McIlroy had the lead, then lost it. And on the final hole, he missed an easy putt that would have clinched the win. That forced a sudden death playoff, which McIlroy did win. He admitted there were lots of bumps.
Rory McIlroy
I didn't make it easy today. I was nervous. It was one of the toughest days I've ever had on the golf course.
Steve Futterman
When McElroy made the winning putt, he sank to his knees and began to cry. For NPR News, I'm Steve Futterman in Augusta, Georgia.

NPR News Now: April 14, 2025 – Detailed Summary
NPR News Now delivered a comprehensive update on April 14, 2025, covering significant global and national events. This summary encapsulates the key discussions, insights, and conclusions from the episode, organized into clear sections for easy navigation.
Timestamp: 00:17 – 01:15
Overview: The episode opened with a deep dive into the high-stakes trial between the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The trial, anticipated to span two months, questions whether Meta’s acquisitions of Instagram and WhatsApp violated competition laws.
Key Points:
Government's Argument: The FTC contends that Meta engaged in unfair competition strategies to dominate the social media landscape, effectively boxing out rivals. They argue that the acquisitions were not merely business expansions but deliberate moves to eliminate competition, thereby harming consumers and the market. The FTC is seeking to dismantle Meta by breaking up Instagram and WhatsApp into separate entities.
Meta’s Defense: Meta asserts that the acquisitions were approved by regulators over a decade ago and that the FTC is now attempting to punish the company retroactively for its past business decisions. Meta maintains that their growth was a result of legitimate business strategies rather than anti-competitive practices.
Notable Quote:
Trial Expectations: With dozens of witnesses, including CEO Mark Zuckerberg and former COO Sheryl Sandberg, the courtroom drama is expected to unfold prominently. Zuckerberg is slated to testify for an extensive seven-hour session, potentially providing firsthand insight into the company's strategies and decision-making processes.
Timestamp: 01:15 – 01:44
Overview: In a significant policy announcement, former President Donald Trump revealed plans to impose tariffs on semiconductors, echoing his administration’s previous actions on steel, automobiles, and aluminum.
Key Points:
Tariff Implementation: Trump indicated that semiconductor tariffs would be implemented "in the not distant future," drawing parallels to the tariffs already placed on other critical industries. This move aims to protect domestic manufacturing and reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, particularly in the tech sector.
Impact on Trade Relations: The announcement comes amid ongoing trade tensions, notably following the U.S. imposition of 145% import taxes on Chinese goods. However, the administration recently excluded electronic goods like smartphones, computers, and semiconductor chips from these tariffs, which has led China to retaliate with its own 125% tariffs on American products.

Timestamp: 01:44 – 02:22
Overview: The podcast reported on the historic trial of South Korea’s former President Yun Sung Yol, who is now charged with insurrection following his removal from office by the Constitutional Court.
Key Points:
Charges Against Yun: Prosecutors allege that Yun orchestrated an insurrection by declaring martial law on December 3rd and deploying troops to Parliament to obstruct lawmakers from rescinding his decree. Yun denies these allegations, maintaining his actions were within his presidential authority.
Legal Proceedings: During Yun's impeachment trial, a crucial witness—a former military officer—testified that orders were given to forcibly remove lawmakers from Parliament, substantiating the insurrection claims. This trial marks the first instance of a sitting South Korean president facing such serious criminal charges.
Potential Consequences: If convicted, Yun could face severe penalties, including the death penalty or life imprisonment. The political landscape remains tense as presidential elections are slated for June 3rd, adding urgency to the trial’s outcome.
