In Washington, I'm Kristen Wright. The man charged with trying to assassinate President Trump last year while on his golf course in Florida is scheduled to be in court today. NPR's Greg Allen reports. Ryan Ruth faces five federal charges, including attempted assassination of a presidential candidate.
Greg Allen
Today's hearing in Fort Pierce, Florida, will focus on the semiautomatic rifle authorities say Ruth planned to use in his assassination attempt in September. A member of Trump's security detail said he saw a gun barrel poking from the tree line a few holes ahead of where the candidate was golfing, and the Secret Service agent fired on the person holding it. A man identified as Ruth fled the scene and was arrested a short time later. Ruth's lawyers are asking a judge to allow their expert to test fire the gun to determine its accuracy and operability. Prosecutors say test firing by an FBI agent shows the gun works, but that it's not important. What is important, they say it's Roost's intent to kill then presidential candidate Donald Trump. President Trump is suggesting he wants to deport US Citizens. The comments were captured during a live streamed exchange with Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele as they entered the Oval Office yesterday. According to video Bukele's office posted on social media, Trump is heard saying homegrowns are next. Legal experts say that would be unconstitutional. The two leaders also discussed Kilmar Abrego Garcia, the Maryland man the administration mistakenly deported to El Salvador. Both countries say they can't return him. Former film producer Harvey Weinstein is going back on trial. Jury selection is scheduled to begin today in Manhattan. Weinstein is charged with sexually assaulting three women. An appeals court overturned his MeToo verdict last year and ordered a new trial, throwing out his 23 year prison sentence. The court ruled an improper witness was allowed to testify. Weinstein's also been convicted in a separate rape case in California. He's appealing that verdict and has pleaded not guilty. In the New York case, a vaccine advisory committee for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will hold their first public meeting of the new Trump administration starting today. NPR's Ping Wang reports. The meeting was postponed in February.

In the two day public meeting, CDC staff will present data and updates on a range of vaccines to a panel of independent advisors who will then discuss and vote on recommendations for some of them, including RSV and Chikungunya. Claire Hannon, head of the association of Immunization Managers, says she's reassured by the meeting's agenda.
Becky Sullivan
Really glad to see that it's scheduled and that, you know, they're holding public comments.
Ping Wang
The committee's advice shapes access and insurance coverage for vaccines. Vaccine advocates have been concerned that Trump administration officials would interfere with this committee by removing members. That has not happened yet. Ping Huang, NPR News.

You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Paige Beckers is the top pick in this year's WNBA draft. Just over a week ago, she won the college national championship with the UConn Huskies, and now she's heading to the Dallas Wings to start her professional career. NPR's Becky Sullivan reports.
Becky Sullivan
The number one pick this year was no surprise. The Dallas Wings select Paige Beckers, University of Connecticut. The 23 year old Beckers has been a top talent since she was a high schooler at UConn. She lived up to expectations when she wasn't sidelined by injuries. She won national player of the year awards in 2021, reached four final Fours and finally cut down the nets with the national title earlier this month, even as she was expected to go number one. She felt grateful.

The Trump administration says it is freezing more than $2 billion in grants and 60 million in contracts to Harvard University. This comes after Harvard's president says the school won't comply with the federal government's demands. The Trump administration sent a letter of those demands to Harvard last week, including that it get rid of its div. Diversity, equity and inclusion programs and screen international students for anti Semitism. Harvard's president says no government should dictate what private universities can teach, whom they can admit and hire, and which areas of study they can pursue.
