Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Hurst. President Trump says the US Navy forcibly seized an Iranian flagged ship, firing on it after it tried to pass the US Blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Iran late last week again closed the strait, saying it wouldn't reopen it until Trump ended the US Blockade. Meanwhile, Trump says he's sending a US Delegation back to Islamabad for peace talks with Iran, though Iran hasn't said it would attend. A White House official says on background that includes Vice President Vance, Steve Wykoff and Trump's son in law, Jared Kushner. And Trump is again threatening to attack Iranian power plants and bridges if Tehran doesn't agree to US Terms for ending the war. US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz defended that threat.

I don't think anyone can say President Trump isn't putting diplomacy first. Of course, that is backed by significant and very real and very capable military power.

Israel says its troops remain inside Lebanon, up to six miles deep from the Israeli border. Israel calls it a security zone to act against threats to northern Israel. The Israeli military published a graphic showing the approximate area where five military divisions, tens of thousands of soldiers are destroying infrastructure Israel says is connected to the Hezbollah militia. Israel is prohibiting displaced Lebanese civilians from returning to dozens of villages in the area Israel is occupying. During the ceasefire, two Israeli soldiers in Lebanon were killed by previously planted explosives. And Israel says Hezbollah fire killed a French UN Peacekeeper clearing unexploded ordnance in Lebanon. Daniel Estrin, NPR News, Tel Aviv.

In Louisiana, police say a gunman killed at least eight children and shot several others in an early morning mass shooting in Shreve that was domestic related and carried out across two homes. The gunman is also dead. It's the deadliest mass shooting in the US in more than two years. The window to register to vote in this year's primary elections is closing soon in a handful of states, and Pierce Hansi Lo Wang has more.

Eligible voters in Georgia and Kentucky who want to cast ballots in the May 19 primaries have until Monday to register. West Virginia's registration deadline for its May 12 primary is on Tuesday, and there's still about a week left to register online for Louisiana's primary and to sign up online by mail or in person for the primary. In Oregon, Virginia is holding a special election for a congressional redistricting referendum on Tuesday, and eligible Virginians who have not registered yet can still do so in person at an early voting location or their polling site on Tuesday. If you've already registered to vote, you may want to check your status on your state election officials website. Eligible voters can sometimes be removed from lists, especially if they move, change their name or haven't voted in a while. Hansi Luong, NPR News.
