In Washington, I'm Giles Snyder. Russia and Ukraine are blaming each other for carrying out attacks in violation of a temporary Easter Day ceasefire. The truce proposal was announced in a unilateral move by Russian President Vladimir Putin. Putin on Saturday, as NPR's Charles Maines reports from Moscow.
Charles Maynes
Even before the Easter ceasefire technically went into effect, both sides voiced skepticism the truce would hold. Putin warned of possible Ukrainian provocations, and Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky suggested the offer was more gimmick than peace gesture. Today, Russia's Defense Ministry said Ukraine carried out hundreds of artillery and drone strikes on Russian occupied territory. In Ukraine, intern Zelensky said Russia continued shelling and assault raids across the front line. Neither claim could be independently verified. The ceasefire attempt comes as President Trump has threatened to abandon efforts to negotiate an end to the conflict if he didn't see immediate progress towards peace. The episode opens with escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine, where both nations accuse each other of violating a temporary Easter ceasefire. Initiated unilaterally by Russian President Vladimir Putin, the truce was met with immediate skepticism from both sides.
Putin's Stance: Putin warned of potential Ukrainian provocations, undermining the ceasefire's credibility before it even took effect.
Zelensky's Response: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky dismissed the ceasefire as a "gimmick" rather than a genuine peace gesture.
Alleged Violations: Russia's Defense Ministry accused Ukraine of executing hundreds of artillery and drone strikes on Russian-occupied territories. Conversely, Ukraine reported continued Russian shelling and assault raids along the front lines. However, neither side's claims have been independently verified.
Impact on Negotiations: The fragile ceasefire comes at a time when former President Donald Trump has threatened to cease negotiations aimed at ending the conflict if immediate peace progress isn't observed.

Hamas's Rejection: Earlier in the week, Hamas declined an Israeli proposal for another temporary truce, insisting on an end to the war and the release of hostages as prerequisites for peace.
Nationwide Protests: Concurrently, large-scale protests erupted in Birmingham, Alabama, with thousands gathering to oppose the Trump administration's policies. Protesters voiced concerns over perceived authoritarian tendencies and legal disregard by the president.

In economic news, international shipping giant DHL announced the suspension of deliveries for high-value packages to individuals in the United States, effective the following day. This decision stems from the introduction of tighter customs checks and new tariffs enacted by the Trump administration.
New Regulations: Starting April 5, any parcel exceeding $800 in value must undergo formal customs clearance, significantly increasing the administrative burden.
DHL's Response: Ben King reports that DHL has been striving to manage the heightened customs workload but finds the sudden policy changes unsustainable. Consequently, to maintain service quality, DHL will halt deliveries of private parcels above the stipulated value, while express deliveries to businesses remain unaffected.
