Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. U.S. forces say they've attacked and seized an Iranian flag cargo ship near the Strait of Hormuz that tried to get past the US Blockade of Iranian ports. And Tehran says it will soon respond to what it calls an act of piracy. As Dory Buskaren reports from near the Iranian border, these latest developments could affect any potential peace talks.

Journalists in Pakistan have been reporting on preparations for peace talks being made in Islamabad, with hotels being booked out and security measures being taken. But Iran's state news agency reported that Tehran is not confirming these talks, that they'll participate at all. They're blaming Washington's, quote, excessive demands, unrealistic expectations and constant shifts in stance. It said the U.S. blockade of Iran's ports is a breach of the ceasefire.

That's during Buscaran reporting. President Trump said Sunday that U.S. officials are heading to Pakistan for more talks this week. Eight children were killed in a mass shooting this weekend in Shreveport, Louisiana. Police say the sole suspect is believed to be the father of seven of the children. The mother of those children and another woman were also shot and wounded. NPR's Joe Hernandez has more on that story.

The Shreveport Police Department says officers were called to a home in the city Sunday morning for what a police spokesperson described as a domestic disturbance. The suspect then allegedly committed a carjacking and led police on a chase before officers opened fire and the suspect died. The children who were killed ranged in age from 1 to 14 years old. Police said one of the victims fled to an adjacent home and that authorities were alerted to a third crime scene nearby. Authorities said some of the victims were his, quote, descendants. Shreveport Mayor Tom Arsenault said the killings were perhaps the worst tragic situation the city has ever seen. Joe Hernandez, NPR News.

It's still not clear just who will be competing to be Peru's next president. One week after the country's presidential primary took place, election results still have not been made public. As NPR's Carrie Khan reports, the current political impasse is just the latest challenge to democratic institutions in that South American country.

Electoral officials are still counting the votes and estimate they may not have the final results until the middle of next month. The conservative daughter of disgraced former President Alberto Fujimori took the first place spot out of a field of 35, but all eyes are on second place to challenge Keiko Fujimori in the June general election. Right now, little more than 10,000 votes separate the two top vote getters. Leading is a nationalist congressman who allies with an imprisoned leftist former president. In third place, an ultra conservative politician. Peru has been suffering from a perpetual political crisis with its conservative Congress liberally using a constitutional clause to remove and appoint presidents. And you're listening to NPR News. Police in London say they're investigating a series of arson attacks on Jewish sites to see if they are the work of Iranian proxies. No one has been injured in those fires, but the latest attack caused minor damage to a North London synagogue on Saturday night. Prime Minister Keir Starmer says he's appalled by the attacks. In Michigan, nearly half the state remains under an emergency declaration, and cleanup is underway after extreme weather pounded the state. A.J. jones of Member station WCMU is in northern Michigan, where widespread flooding has destroyed homes in several rural communities.

Black Lake is located in northern lower Michigan in the tip of the Mitt, where entire roads were washed away by floodwaters. Officials evacuated the area over the weekend while first responders waded in on watercraft to assess damage and conduct safety checks. John Mousseau lives on Black Lake. He says his house is a total loss and everything will need replacing. Totally unexpected.

and we've owned a house since 90. Musso says he and many of his neighbors don't have flood insurance. State police say they're monitoring flooding in the region and working to remove debris. For NPR News, I'm A.J. jones in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

Matt Fitzpatrick beat the world's number one golfer Sunday to win the PGA Heritage event in Hilton Head, North Carolina. Fitzpatrick hit a 13 foot birdie putt in the first playoff hole to beat Scotty Scheffler. Scheffler was down by three strokes, but made up the deficit over the last four holes for the tie in regulation play. Kim Si Woo finished the tournament in third place. I'm Dale Willman, NPR News.
