Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. Major damage is being reported in northern Oklahoma. Video posted online shows a massive tornado bearing down and homes flattened in or near the city of Enid, home to Vance Air Force Base. In a social media message, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt said he's been in touch with officials in Enid and he urged people to follow local warnings as storms move through the state. Tonight, federal fire managers are stepping in to help contain a wildfire in South Georgia that has destroyed nearly 90 homes. Emily Jones of member station WABE reports that severe drought conditions are making the fire difficult to contain.

Fire crews from all over Georgia have flocked to this rural area in the state's southeast. Local officials have asked for more help. The blaze seemed mostly under control a couple of days ago. Gail Schumann says she didn't even know there was a fire nearby. Then her neighbor's shed caught fire and

Shuman got lucky. Her house survived, but the fire destroyed the pump for her well, so she's staying at a nearby church for now. More people have been forced to evacuate as the shifting winds send the fire in new directions. For NPR News, I'm Emily Jones in Nahana, Georgia.

Israel and Lebanon have extended their ceasefire agreement and peace talks. At the White house Thursday, top U.S. officials, including President Trump, Vice President J.D. vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, met with the country's ambassadors. NPR's Danielle Kurtzleben reports.
Danielle Kurtzleben
In a social media message, Trump wrote that the current ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will extend for three more weeks. That ceasefire has been shaky. These talks came a day after Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed at least five people, including a Lebanese journalist. Trump also wrote that the US Will help Lebanon protect itself from Hezbollah, the Iran backed militant group in Lebanon. But he did not elaborate on what actions the US Would take. The president added that he anticipates hosting Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun in the near future. Danielle Kurtzleben, NPR News, the White House.

The soaring costs of jet fuel forcing airlines in Europe to cut thousands of flights. Here's the piers.
Joel Rose
Joel Rose, German carrier Lufthansa said this week it would cut 20,000 flights from its schedule through the fall to save on jet fuel. KLM and Scandinavian Airlines have also trimmed their schedules. Jet fuel has climbed sharply since the start of the US And Israeli led war in Iran. And airlines in Europe, which imports a significant percentage of its jet fuel from refineries in the Middle east, have been hit particularly hard. Energy Experts warned that a prolonged closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway off Iran's coast, would lead to higher prices for jet fuel and even possible shortages in Europe ahead of the peak summer travel season. This is NPR News. A U.S. soldier involved in the military operation that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been charged with using classified information about the mission to win more than $400,000 on the prediction market site polymarket. Federal officials unsealed the indictment Thursday. A California Bay Area jury has awarded a historic 16 million dollar verdict to a man abused by a Catholic priest as a child. Katie DiBenedetti, Member Station K AQED reports.
Katie DiBenedetti
The case is believed to be the first in California to go before a jury since a change in state law in 2019 led to hundreds of similar reports of abuse. Attorney Rick Simmons, who represented the 61 year old victim at trial, says the verdict is an indication of how those cases throughout the state could play out in court.

That tells everyone that society is represented by a jury is just tired of this and they are crying. They are yelling it's time for change.
