Let us surprise you live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. President Trump is safe after shots were fired at the White House Correspondent's dinner in Washington, D.C. tonight. He and his cabinet were rushed out of the event when the shots were heard. NPR's Deepa Shivaram was there. She says it was chaotic.

What sounded like several gunshots were fired at the hotel where the dinner was taking place. Secret Service agents said a shooter was in custody. At 8:38pm several Cabinet members, including HHS Secretary RFK Jr. And FBI Director Kash Patel, were moved to hold rooms inside the hotel. The attendees of the event are leaving. Secret Service says everyone, including the president, first lady and cabinet are okay. This is President Trump's first dinner as president and he was to have given a speech. Afterward, Trump returned to the event praising the Secret Service and law enforcement for their quick actions. He is scheduled to speak from the White House about this event soon. President Trump has canceled sending a delegation to Pakistan for further peace talks about Iran. NPR's Cat Lonsdorf reports from Beirut. That's after Iran's foreign minister left Pakistan earlier today without meeting with US Officials.

US Special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump's son in law Jared Kushner were supposed to travel to Islamabad. Iran's foreign Minister Abbas Arakchee left Pakistan earlier today after Iranian officials made it clear clear they only plan to meet with Pakistani officials, not with the U. S. Iran has dismissed Trump's unilateral extension of the U S. Iran ceasefire as, quote, meaningless, saying the continued U. S Blockade on Iranian ports is in violation of that agreement. The U. S. Is intercepting ships coming to or from Iran as Iran is maintaining military control of the Strait of Hormuz. Most ships in and around the strait are not moving and neither side appears to be budging. Kat Lansdorf, NPR News, Beirut.

In southeastern Georgia, two wildfires continue to threaten homes and lives as officials warn that strong winds could spread the flames amid historic drought conditions. The Brantley County Highway 82 fire has destroyed at least 87 homes Brantley County Manager Joey Cason says the fire is moving at a fast pace and they don't have much control over where it's going.
