Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm NORAH RAMM. A 31 year old California man is to be arraigned in federal court tomorrow after last night's shooting at the White House Correspondents Dinner. President Trump was rushed off the stage after the suspect exchanged gunshots with security agents. NPR's Franco Ordonez reports.

President Trump said he initially thought the shooting was a falling tray and didn't immediately get down on the ground.

It's always shocking when something like this happens, happened to me a little bit, and that never changes.

Trump survived two assassination attempts in 2024. The president, still in his tuxedo, was speaking at a hurriedly called press conference shortly after being evacuated from the dinner. Trump said the gunman shot a U.S. secret Service agent who was saved by his bulletproof vest. Agents quickly apprehended the man. Trump described the hotel where the event was being held as not a secure building as and he argued that it shows why the White House needed a new ballroom. Franco Ordonez, NPR News.

The suspect is initially facing weapons and assault charges. Officials say more charges may be added as the investigation continues. He's been identified as Cole Allen, a 31 year old man from the Los Angeles suburb of Torrance, California. Steve Futterman went there and spoke with people who knew him on the street

where Cole Thomas Allen lived, law enforcement spent much of the night giving gathering evidence that might explain what led to last night's shooting. Allen, a graduate of Caltech, worked for a company that provides tutoring and preparation for college entrance examinations. Among the evidence that law enforcement was looking for overnight were such things as computers, cell phones and external digital storage devices.
