Pierre Poilievre, a 45 year old career politician and leader of the Conservatives, 60 year old Mark Carney, who's the current prime minister. Now if this election had been held earlier this year, say January, Poiliev and the Conservatives most likely would have won by a landslide. At one point, they were 27 points ahead in the polls. People were fed up with liberals under then Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and it looked like the Liberal Party was, you know, headed for the political dustbin. But not now. The Liberals have rebounded and are poised to WIN Tomorrow's election.

NPR's Jackie Northam reporting this. After President Trump outraged Canadians after saying he wanted to make Canada the 51st state of the United States and placing steep tariffs on the country, Democrats protested on the steps of the U.S. capitol building today, taking aim at a Republican budget proposal. This ahead of Congress return to Washington after a two week recess. And peer's Luke Garrett has more.
Cory Booker
When the sun rose on Sunday, Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries of New York sat on the steps of the U.S. capitol, live streaming their opposition to a Republican budget plan.

The greatest moral threats to our country.
Cory Booker
Booker warned it would severely cut Medicaid and Social Security benefits. But Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson denies this and no specific cuts to the programs have been decided yet. D.C. teacher Ashley Porter stopped her morning run short to sit with Booker and Jeffries.

It's good to know that there are people who are really thinking about Medicaid, who are thinking about people who really need the services that our government provides in order to survive.

The US and the Philippines practiced firing off missiles together this weekend, hours after China said it had seized a disputed reef in Kentucky, untested waters in the area. NPR's Emily Fang has more.
Ashley Porter
China said it taken control of Sandy Cay, a tiny spit of land in the middle of the South China Sea, much of which China says is its territory, despite multiple overlapping claims from countries like the Philippines and Brunei. Sandy K, while small, is highly strategic. It's only a few miles from the Philippines largest coast guard outpost in the contested seas. Meanwhile, over the last few years, the US has stepped up its military presence there as well, and it is finishing up the last week and a half of scheduled annual military exercises. The Bali Katan exercises, as they are called, have gotten bigger with more troops as China has fortified its claims in the South China Sea. Emily Fang, NPR News.

You're listening to NPR News from Washington. Vancouver Police have charged a man who they say rammed his SUV into a crowd at a Filipino street festival last night night with several counts of second degree murder. At least 11 people died. Dozens were injured. Police say some festival attendees detained the 30 year old suspect and he was arrested. They say he had multiple interactions with police and they don't think this was an act of terrorism. Thousands of people gathered at the Florabama, a weathered roadhouse that straddles the Florida Alabama state line, to see who can hurl a dead fish the farthest. Tia Strickland from member station WU WF reports this old an odd tradition celebrates a landscape and a culture in flux.

Mullet is a silvery bottom feeding fish that was once central to working class life along Florida's Gulf Coast.
Emily Fang
Back in the day, I mean, the mullet were everywhere and there weren't as many houses all over the waterway. Any Joe Schmo could go down to the water and throw a cast net and catch some mullet, fry them up right there on the beach, invite all their friends.

Teresa Pitts runs a seafood market just down the road from this weekend's interstate mullet toss. She says that these days this iconic fish is quickly fading from menus, a casualty of shifting markets and changing coastlines. Even as tastes evolve, though, the toss endures.
