News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. Vancouver, Canada. Authorities are calling Saturday night's incident where several people were killed when a motorist drove into a crowd of people at a Filipino cultural festival a mass casualty event. Several others were injured when an SUV plowed into the large crowd. A 30 year old Vancouver man has been arrested. The investigation is ongoing. President Donald Trump marks 100 days in office next week. It includes dramatic shifts in domestic policy and international relations, as well as uncertainty for many Americans. The most recent University of Michigan survey on consumer confidence shows Americans are fearful about a possible recession and high inflation. NPR senior contributor Ron Elwing reports. The president recent poll numbers are down since the inauguration.

His polls have softened since January. A Fox News poll this week showed Trump still had majority approval on border security, but on no other issue. Other major national polls have found Trump falling back down to the low to mid-40s in overall approval and also on the economy, which had been his strongest issue in November's election.

Pope Francis has been laid to rest. A period of mourning now begins. NPR's Sarah Ventri reports from Rome.

Pope Francis funeral mass marked the beginning of an ancient tradition called the Novem Diales, nine consecutive days of mourning. They'll include daily masses presided by cardinals. Following this will be the papal conclave, during which time 135 cardinal electors will be sequestered as they choose the next pope. Although there are 252 cardinals in total, only those under the age of 80 qualify to be electors. The rest can serve in an advisory capacity but may not vote. And those who are considered likely candidates are called papaboli, an Italian term meaning popable. Sarah Ventri, NPR News, Rome.

And from Washington, you're listening to NPR News. In southern Iran, at least 14 people are dead. As many as 750 others were injured in a massive explosion Saturday at a port. The cause of the blast is under investigation. A private security firm says it may have been caused by the improper handling of rocket fuel made used to make a rocket propellant. In East Africa, the Ugandan government says its latest Ebola outbreak has come to an end. At least two people died, including a 14 year old child. Emaduel Ngaza reports from Niobre, Kenya.

Ugandan authorities announced the end of this latest outbreak of Ebola after 42 days of no new reported cases in line with the World Health Organization WHO guidelines. The last patients were discharged in March. This is the ninth Ebola outbreak in Kampala since 2000. Uganda neighbours the Democratic Republic of Congo, which has had dozens of outbreaks, including one several years ago that killed nearly 2,300 people. The WHO has placed neighboring countries under strict surveillance for the virus, which is highly infectious and often fatal. The strain in the latest Uganda outbreak has no approved vaccine. For NPR News, I'm Emmanuelligunza in Nairobi, Kenya.
