Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. A new poll from NPR PBS News. Marist is out today. The overwhelming majority of respondents think President Trump is moving too quickly on his actions. NPR's Domenico Montanaro reports. They want him to obey court orders as well.
Domenico Montanaro
61% of the more than 1,400 respondents to the survey say Trump is rushing to make changes. That's up 5 points from last month. About 4 in 10, though mostly Republicans, think he's doing what needs to be done. When it comes to court orders, 85% say Trump should follow them even if he doesn't like them. Three quarters of Democrats strongly agree with that statement, but only a quarter of Republicans do. What's more, Elon Musk and his Department of Government efficiency have grown even more unpopular. Just 34% have a favorable rating of Musk, down 5 points from last month. Domenico Montanaro, NPR News, Washington.

President Trump is marking 100 days in office this week. He'll hold a rally tonight outside Detroit. Treasury Secretary Scott Besant is scheduled to speak later this hour at the White House as part of the 100 day observance. Yesterday morning, Trump's border czar gave remarks as well, and Trump signed an executive order. It targets jurisdictions that limit cooperation with federal immigration agents. Canadian voters have chosen Mark Carney as the country's prime minister. They cast ballots yesterday in what is seen as the most consequential election in Canada in decades. As NPR's Jackie Northam reports, Carney beat an opponent whose policies were seen as similar to President Trump's.
Jackie Northam
Carney entered the political race at a time when Canadians were angry over Trump placing stiff tariffs on the country and threatening to make Canada the 51st state. The 60 year old Carney has a Wall street background and was head of the bank of England and the bank of Canada, and so was seen as having the chops to take on Trump. His main opponent, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poliev, was seen as too closely aligned with Trump's policies on immigration, shrinking government and ending Wokeism. Still, it wasn't a landslide for Carney and his Liberal Party. He'll likely have to create a coalition government. Jackie Northam, NPR News.

Testimony is expected today in the Tennessee trial of three former Memphis police officers. They're charged with the beating of black motorist Tyre Nichols in 2023. He died a few days after in the hospital. The three former officers have pleaded not guilty. Prosecutor Paul Hagerman says the officers were angry when they pulled Nichols over.
Paul Hagerman
Like I said, not monsters, but man overcome by anger and frustration and overcome by the moment, who literally beat a man to death.
Korva Coleman
The video shows the beating. Defense lawyers say that Nichols ran from a traffic stop and that the former officers were doing their job effectively to restrain him. You're listening to npr. Illinois State Police are still investigating yesterday's deadly crash near the city of Springfield. Three children and a young adult were killed when a car car plowed through a building where their after school program was being held. Several other children were injured. Illinois State Police say the crash does not appear to be a targeted attack. The unidentified driver is being evaluated at a hospital. International shipping company DHL says it will resume shipping packages to the US that are worth between $800 and $2500. The company had previously suspended this, saying President Trump's tariffs had created logistical problems. Fantasy author Philip Pullman has announced the long awaited conclusion to his trilogy, the Book of dust. As NPR's Andrew Limbong reports, the last entry in Pullman's series was published in 2019.
Andrew Limbong
Philip Pullman's fantasy books have sold millions of copies around the world. His work has been adapted for stage film and an HBO show based on his early trilogy, his Dark Materials. According to an announcement from his publisher. The newest book will come out in October, titled the Rose Field. The book's publication is timed with the 30th anniversary of Pullman's breakout novel, the Golden Compass. In the statement, Pullman, who is 78, wrote that he sees himself more in line with the oral tradition than as a writer. I think of myself as a storyteller rather than a novelist or a writer of literary fiction belonging among the tellers of folk tales, fairy tales, ballads and myths. Andrew Limbong, NPR News.
