Details@Capital1.com Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. The Republican led Senate has once again blocked a measure to limit President Trump's war powers in Iran. NPR's Claudia Grisales reports. Democrats have former forced the vote six times since the conflict began 60 days ago tomorrow.

Two Republicans, Kentucky's Rand Paul and Maine's Susan Collins, voted with Democrats. Under the current War Powers Act, Trump can invoke a 30 day extension to wind down operations. Several Republicans have pointed to that provision as a potential way to buy time in the midst of ceasefire negotiations to end the conflict. Some are also warning once the war crosses that 60 day mark, they will no longer support funding the operation until the administration defends the plans. Claudi Selles, NPR News, the Capitol.

President Trump has signed a bill to fund much of the Department of Homeland Security and bring an end to the longest agency shutdown in history. The shutdown lasted for 75 days as Democrats refused to fund Trump's immigration immigration enforcement operations without changes. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson celebrated the passage of the bill.

We will fund border patrol and immigration enforcement as soon as we return for the work session when that bill is finalized.

Republicans will later move to provide $70 billion for immigration enforcement through a separate process on their own that won't require Democratic support. Maine's Democratic govern Janet Mills is suspending her campaign for the Senate seat long held by Republican Susan Collins. Kevin Miller with Maine Public Radio says the governor's decision likely sets up a November matchup between Collins and a progressive Democrat closely aligned with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders.

Numerous polls have shown Mills badly trailing her chief Democratic rival Graham Platner, headed into the state's June 9 primary. But Mills said in a statement that while she had the drive to continue her campaign, she lacked the financial resources she would need. Mills, who was Maine's first female governor, was recruited by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer to run against Collins, who is widely regarded as one of the most vulnerable Republican incumbents this year. Now the Democratic establishment will likely have to rally around Platner, a Marine Corps veteran and oysterman who's been drawing large crowds since last summer with his populist, anti establishment message. The US economy accelerated at the start of 2026, expanding at a modest 2% pace from January through after recovering from last fall's 43 day federal government shutdown. But the future outlook is clouded by the Iran war and the US Stock market resumed its record setting climb today. This is NPR News. President Trump is calling for a new government website where people can find and compare private sector retirement savings accounts. The order is intended to help more people gain access to retirement plans before next year. That's when the federal government will start matching retirement contributions made by low to moderate income workers who aren't federal employees. A major study finds that artificial intelligence has made big advances in medical reasoning and can outperform doctors on some common tasks. The research was published in the journal Science Today. NPR's Will Stone has more.

Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that an AI reasoning model developed by OpenAI excelled at diagnosing patients and making decisions about managing their care. It matched and often outperformed doctors and the earlier AI model, GPT4. The study included actual cases from the emergency department at Beth Israel deaconess Medical Center. Dr. Adam Rodman was one of the study authors.
