Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Louise Schiavone. President Trump says he's reviewing Iran's latest proposal to end the war in Iran. The president was boarding Air Force One in Florida when he told reporters that the following 5,000 U.S. troops withdrawn from Germany will be followed by more drawdowns after the German chancellor's criticism of the war. We're going to cut way down and

It's the latest sign of a deepening rift with European allies over the war. As Willem Marx reports, the move is raising fresh questions about America's commitment to the continent.

Germany's defense minister, Boris Pistorius called the decision expected and said Europe must now strengthen its own role within NATO. The withdrawal appears to follow a bitter public spat between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Nurtz, who'd told students that U.S. envoys sent to Iran talks in Pakistan clearly have no truly convincing strategy. Trump had responded on Truth Social and branded Mertz, quote, totally ineffective on Ukraine, then threatened similar troop cuts in Italy and Spain. Senator Jack Reid, Democrat of Rhode island, called on Trump to reverse course and warned that allies now see American security guarantees as hostage to the president's frame of mind. For NPR News, I'm Willem Marks.

Spirit Airlines landed its final flight earlier today at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport from Detroit metropolitan airport. After 34 years and multiple financial challenges, Spirit's bright yellow planes will no longer operate. NPR's Joel Rose reports. Fuel prices dealt the final blow to Spirit.

The whole industry has been dealing with a spike in the price of jet fuel since the beginning of the war in Iran, which has disrupted the supply of crude oil and jet fuel coming out of the Persian Gulf. That's driven up the price of jet fuel worldwide. Even in the US which is a net exporter of jet fuel, the price has nearly doubled in the past two months. That is putting pressure on all airlines, really. But in the case of Spirit, problems really ran much deeper than that.
