At a news briefing, Hegseth said U.S. forces have opened a safe passage for tankers through the strait. He said the Iranian boats that have attacked ships there and the US Destruction of those boats doesn't cross the threshold of restarting major combat operations and don't mean an end to the ceasefire, which might trigger a need for congressional approval to continue the war. Hegses said the US Mission to protect a free shipping lane was temporary and other countries should take over.

We hope South Korea would step up, just like we hope Japan would step up, just like we hope Australia would step up, just like we hope Europe steps up. But we're not waiting for them to do so. We're looking to set the conditions to hand to them.

The price of oil remains high. NPR Scott Horsley reports on what that means for drivers heading into warmer months.

Crude oil prices have come down slightly from their peak on Monday, but the US benchmark is still well above $100 a barrel, and investors are growing nervous that relief could be a long time in coming. Futures contracts for Brent oil to be delivered six months from now are still priced above $90 a barrel. Retail gasoline prices in the US continue to climb. AAA says the average price of regular gas rose more than 2 cents overnight to about $4.48 a gallon. Scott Horsley, NPR News, Washington.

In an interview published in the New Yorker this week, former President Barack Obama was asked about the Trump admin to join Israel in waging war against Iran in late February. Obama says when he was president, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had made the same arguments for armed confrontation with Iran to him that Netanyahu has made to Trump. Obama adds that Netanyahu may have, quote, gotten what he wanted, but whether that is ultimately best for the Israeli or the American people, Obama says he'd question that. There are now two confirmed and five suspected hantavirus cases linked to a cruise ship anchored off the coast of Cape Verde. NPR's Gabriela Emanuel has the latest.

Hantavirus is a rare but serious condition that typically spreads because of exposure to rodent, urine, feces or saliva. But in a small number of cases, the virus can be transmitted between people. The who's Maria Van Kerkhoff spoke at a press conference Tuesday.
Maria Van Kerkhoff
We do believe that there may be some human to human transmission that's happening among the really close contacts, the husband and wife and people who've shared cabins, et cetera.

She says the initial cases may have contracted the virus when off the ship. She says officials have brought more personal protective equipment on board for the passengers who remain on the boat. Three people have died of the 147 passengers and crew members. Gabriela Emanuel, NPR News.

The British Beer and Pub association says an average of two pubs closed per day in the first three months of this year. That's about 2,400 jobs lost. The association blames rising rents and taxes. Earlier this year, some pubs banned members of Parliament refusing to serve them. Last month, the government gave in and offered pubs and music venues a 15% tax rebate.
