From NPR News in Washington, I'm Dave Mattingley. Canada's newly elected prime Minister Mark Carney will be at the White House today for talks with President Trump. As Dan Carpent reports, Trump and Carney are expected to talk about tariffs and relations between the two countries.
Dan Carpent
Carney's trip comes as Trump has again voiced the notion of Canada as the 51st state. How Carney deals with that could set the stage for future talks. Carney has insisted that Canadian sovereignty is not up for discussion. Instead, the prime minister is looking to begin a comprehensive set of talks on tariffs, trade and security in a broader Canada U.S. relationship.
Dave Mattingly
As Dan Karpinchuk reporting, Carney describes a phone call he had with Trump last week as very constructive, adding he's optimistic about trade negotiations with the U.S. more Americans say they're losing confidence in the ability of the federal health agencies to carry out their key functions. NPR's Ping Huang says that's according to a new poll from the nonprofit kff.
Ping Huang
The poll comes a few months into the Trump administration, which has been making sweeping cuts to budget and staffing at federal health agencies, and put Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Who has long questioned the safety of vaccines, at the helm. Fewer than half of those surveyed now trust that the CDC and FDA can ensure that prescription drugs are safe and effective or respond to outbreaks like measles and bird flu. Liz Hamill with KFF says there's been a change in trends within party lines.

And so for the first time, we saw a double digit decline in trusting government agencies for vaccine information among Democrats.
Ping Huang
And while Democrats are still more likely than Republicans to trust federal health agencies for vaccine information, trust among Republicans has been inching up. Ping Huang, NPR News.

Andrew Limbong
One of those New York Times wins went to Doug Mills for his work photographing the attempted assassination on President Trump in July. He told NPR in an interview the day after that that he didn't realize what he had caught on camera until after he sent his photos to his editor.
Doug Mills

Andrew Limbong
The staff of the Washington Post won the breaking News Reporting award for their coverage that day. And Reuters won for its investigative reporting into the fentanyl industry.
