Live from NPR News, I'm Lakshmi Singh. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has met with Pope Leo today at the Vatican in part to smooth over strained relations with the Holy See following repeated attacks from President Trump. NPR's Jason DeRose reports. The meeting comes as Leo is marking his first anniversary as pope.

The Vatican, in a statement, says Rubio and Leo had, quote, cordial discussions. It goes on to say the US Secretary of state reaffirmed a shared commitment to fostering good bilateral relations between the Holy See and the United States. The Vatican says there was also an exchange of views on countries affected by war during Pope Leo's first year. He has repeatedly spoken out in favor of peace, specifically regarding US Military action in Iran and Venezuela. The pontiff even urged people to contact their elected officials to ask them to work for peace. That attracted the ire of President Trump. Jason DeRose, NPR News.

Big oil companies have been reporting their earnings for the first quarter, which included the start of the war with Iran. Major producers have not indicated they plan to boost production to fill the hole in the market created by the disruption in the strait of Hormuz. NPR's Camilla Dominosky has details.

Some smaller independent oil companies are making a different calculation. Diamondback CEO, in its earnings this week said, quote, if this isn't the time to grow now, then I don't know when it is. Camila Domonosky, NPR News.

A program that deputizes local police to help ICE with immigration enforcement has grown rapidly since President Trump took office again. NPR's Meg Anderson reports. The Department of Homeland Security is offering millions of dollars in incentives to police who participate.

DHS has promised to reimburse officer salaries, give bonuses to police for finding undocumented people, and money for new cars and equipment like fingerprint scanners and license plate readers. A recent report estimated that if every police agency gets what they've been promised, it could add up to as much as billion this year alone. But DHS hasn't released much information on who has actually gotten funds. Felicity Rose with the advocacy group Forward US says normally federal grants go through an open process and are tracked closely. It's very, very concerning that there's so little transparency in this money. DHS declined to give NPR more specifics. Meg Anderson, NPR News.

He says they talked about trade, specifically tariffs, among other issues. Trump wants to paint the great granite exterior of the historic Eisenhower Executive Office Building white today. The National Capital Planning Commission is expected to hold a hearing on the proposed makeover of the 19th century landmark. It's part of several changes Trump is pursuing in and around around the grounds of the White House. The most controversial so far is a demolition of the East Wing to make way for a ballroom at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars. A new study finds taking an extra 1,000 steps per day is linked to a significant decrease in the risk of complications after surgery. NPR's Allison Aubrey has details.

Getting steps in after surgery can help preserve lung function, lower the risk of blood clots and support overall recovery. In this new study that includes health data from nearly 2,000 patients, every thousand steps that a patient took was equivalent to about an 18% reduction in their chance of having a complication. Dr. Julie Silver of Wake Forest University School of Medicine says this shows how strong the connection between movement and recovery can be.
C
Getting people up and moving right away is so good for them, and this is an actionable thing that can empower patients.

The study is published in the Journal of the American College of Surgeons. Alison Aubrey, NPR News.
