In Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. The Treasury Department has announced a new round of sanctions that target individuals and companies, many in China and Hong Kong. NPR's Jennifer Pack reports. The accused of helping Iran develop drones and ballistic missiles as part of its weapons program.
Jennifer Pak
The US treasury accuses one Chinese individual and seven companies from China and Hong Kong of helping Iran to secure weapons and supplies for its drones and missiles. This comes days before President Trump plans to meet his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping in Beijing. The leaders have a lot to discuss, but the Iran war might overshadow the meeting. China buys most of Iran's oil. The US Is trying to sever this economic lifeline for Iran. It has also sanctioned small private refineries in China that purchase Iranian oil, but Beijing has ordered its companies to disregard those U.S. sanctions. Jennifer Pak, NPR News, Shanghai.

Time is running out for registering to vote in this year's primary elections in some states. NPR's Hansi Lo Wang reports. These states are getting ready to hold their contests next month.
Hansi Lo Wang
Eligible voters in South Carolina who want to cast ballots in the state's June 9 primary have until Sunday to register online and Monday to get mail in applications postmarked. New Jersey's voter registration deadline is Tuesday, and in Nevada, eligible voters have until Tuesday to register by mail online and in person. Registration in Nevada continues through June 9, which is also the day of that state's primary. If you're planning to register by mail, the U.S. postal Service recommends stopping by a post office and asking for a free manual postmark at the counter. And if you've already registered to vote, you may want to go to your state election official's website and check your status. Eligible voters can sometimes be removed from lists, especially if they move, change their name or haven't voted in a while. Hansi Wang, NPR News.

the hantavirus outbreak is not another Covid situation, adding that transmission generally requires prolonged close contact. The CDC is now classifying the outbreak as a level three emergency response response. It's the lowest emergency activation tier, but still significant enough to trigger international coordination. This is NPR News. Canada's western province of Manitoba has declared a public health emergency over a rise in HIV infections. Dan Carpentek reports. Health officials say the number of infection rates is significantly above the national average.
Dan Karpenchuk
The province's chief public health officer, Dr. Brent Rooson, says Manitoba continues to experience some of the highest rates of HIV in Canada. He says in 2024, Manitoba had an infection rate three and a half times the national average, and the number of cases continues to rise. Roussaint says it's being fueled by injection drug use, homelessness, mental health issues, as well as sexually transmitted or bloodborne infections. He adds that the highest number of cases are in Winnipeg and indigenous people have been disproportionately affected. He says the public health response must include an increased awareness, more access to prevention, testing and treatment. For NPR News, I'm Dan Karpenchuk in Toronto.

Google will pay $50 million to settle a class action lawsuit accusing the company of systemic discrimination against black employees. The lawsuit claimed black voters were routinely pushed into lower paying jobs and denied opportunities for advancement based on racial stereotypes. Google denies wrongdoing, but agreed to settle the case without emitting. The plaintiffs say the settlement is a significant step toward holding one of the world's most powerful companies accountable and making clear that discriminatory practices will not be tolerated. I'm Windsor Johnston and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
