Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. The cruise ship whose passengers have been infected with the hantavirus will arrive in Spain on the Canary Islands Sunday from where their evacuations will take. Harry Schultz reports. Several countries, plus the European Union, are sending planes to transport the people after they disembark.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
World health organization chief Dr. Tedros Gabrisis is on the island of Tenerife to oversee the evacuation of remaining passengers from MV Hondias. Tedros thanked Spain for what he called an act of solidarity and moral duty in accepting the cruise ship's docking. He tried to allay fears about the possibility the deadly virus will spread during the transfer of passengers.
Steve Fowler
It's only when we support each other that we can respond more effectively to virus or to outbreak like this, he says.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
Every precaution has been taken. Three people have died and several others who left the ship already are infected, but no one still on board has tested positive. Belgium, Germany and France are among the countries sending planes to Tenerife to pick up their citizens. For NPR News, I'm Terri Schultz in Brussels.

Tennessee's Republican controlled legislature has redrawn these state's congressional districts. The move carves up the state's only black majority district in Memphis into three districts, ultimately moving more Democratic voters into rural Republican districts. Memphis resident Steve Fowler said the new congressional lines mean he and longtime neighbors who live across the street from each other will be represented by different members of Congress.
Steve Fowler
One of the weirdest things is the fact here I sit on one side of my street and my neighbors across the street are in a different district. I mean, my bass player in my band is across the street and he's in a different district than me.

The redistricting plan comes just days after the supreme court, on a 6 to 3 vote by the conservative majority, struck down a key section of the Voting Rights act, which required maps to be drawn, not to discriminate against racial minorities. Finances at the U.S. postal Service are still on shaky ground, as the mailing agency reports a net loss for the fifth quarter of the year. NPR's Hansi Lawang reports on the story.
Hansi Lo Wang
The Postal Service relies on stamps and service fees, not tax dollars, to deliver mail six days a week to just every address in the country. But with people sending a lot less mail than in past decades. USPS ended this fiscal year's second quarter with a net loss of $2 billion. Postmaster General David Steiner says USPS has already raised shipping prices, cut workers hours and stopped payments to its pension plan.
David Steiner
The Postal Service remains in a serious financial crisis. I communicated that plainly in front of Congress and our country in March because I don't think that we serve anyone if we soften these realities.

Sanders says Congress should change laws to let the Postal Service borrow more money and reform its retirement plans. Hansi Le Wang, NPR News.

Oil markets on Oil on Oil markets remain steady. This is NPR News. The 61st Venice Bienna Loli opened today in a chaotic atmosphere marked by geopolitical strife. NPR's Chloe Veldman reports. The international art event has been hit with protests and resignations.

Dozens of artists issued a statement withdrawing from awards consideration at this year's Biennale. The move comes in solidarity with the awards jury, who recently resigned en masse after issuing a statement that they would not award prizes to countries charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court. That includes Israel and Russia. At a protest earlier in the week against Russia's return to the Biennale for the first time since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, art collective Pussy Riots stormed the Russian Pavilion in bright pink balaclava hats.
Protester
No Putin in Venice.

Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on Friday to protest Israel's presence over the war in Gaza. Some exhibitions shuttered for hours while artists and curators joined the march. Chloe Veltman, NPR News.

Baseball hall of Fame member Bobby Cox, the longtime manager of the Atlanta Braves, died Saturday. Cox was 84. During his career in Major League Baseball, he played briefly for the New York Yankees and managed the Toronto Blue Jays. But his best success came during a 25 year run as Atlanta's manager. He won the 1995 World Series, captured five National League titles and the Braves won a consecutive 14 division titles. From 1991 to 2005, he was named Manager of the Year four times.
