In Washington, I'm Dan Ronan. The Treasury Department is placing a new round of sanctions on 10 people and companies accused of helping Iran develop drones and ballistic missiles. NPR's Jennifer Pak reports. Many are from China and Hong Kong.
Jennifer Pak
The US treasury accuses one Chinese individual and seven companies from China and Hong Kong of helping Iran to secure weapons and supplies for its drones and missiles. This comes days before President Trump plans to meet his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing. The leaders have a lot to discuss, but the Iran war might overshadow the meeting. China buys most of Iran's oil. The US Is trying to sever this economic lifeline for Iran. It has also sanctioned small private refineries in China that purchase Iranian oil. But Beijing has ordered its companies to disregard those U.S. sanctions. Jennifer Pak, NPR News, Shanghai.

The director general of the World Health Organization is trying to reassure residents of the Spanish island of Tenerife. He says there's no cause for concern as people from a ship with hantavirus now arrive there. The WHO is insisting none of the roughly 140 passengers and crew on board the ship have any signs of the rodent borne illness. And the health agency says it is not another outbreak of COVID 19. Dr. Tedros Adeno Gaboras is trying to assure residents not to worry.
Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
We hear you, we understand, but the situation is much better now. And the other advantage is the nature of the disease as well.

The ship is expected to arrive at Tenerife sometime Sunday morning. The WHO plans to move the passengers from the ship and keep them away from the general public at least 13 people died in Lebanon Saturday during a series of Israeli drone and air strikes. Lebanon's health ministry says two of those who died were a man and his daughter. The attacks mark an escalation in the fighting since a ceasefire began between Israel and Hezbollah. Meanwhile, the latest round of peace negotiations are set to take place in Washington this next week. This is npr. California, an epicenter of the housing crisis in the United States, will now have one agency overseeing programs intended to address affordability. From member station kqed, Adita Bundimudi reports that California leaders say the new system will make affordable, they say housing cheaper to build.

Right now, housing developers say they have to navigate the state's nine different agencies overseeing some 40 programs. Sarah Karlinski is with UC Berkeley's Turner center for Housing Innovation. When she compared California's system to other states, she found that 80% of them had a more consolidated system.
Sarah Karlinski
Successful states, they have really high capacity, well trained staff who work very well together. And while achieving this in a fragmented system might be impossible, it's easier to do if there is some type of consolidation.

The new state agency will include separate departments for homelessness, financing and civil rights. The governor's office recently reported the number of people living outside decreased by 9% last year. For NPR News, I'm Aditi Bandlamudi in San Francisco.
