Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Health officials are continuing to evaluate passengers from the Dutch cruise ship tied to a hantavirus outbreak after the vessel arrived near Spain's Canary Islands today. More than a dozen Americans are being flown back to the US for monitoring, while other passengers will return to their home countries. The outbreak has triggered growing concern online, with some people comparing it to the early days of COVID Dr. Seema Yasmin is a public health expert at Stanford University. She says while the fears are understandable, this is not believed to pose the same level of global threat because of

the world we're living in and especially the fact that the US now does not have a seat at the table when it comes to global health in the same way that we did when we were part of the who, but as much as we did when we had a well funded and robust cdc, this may not be as big of a threat as Covid. And yet the fear and the panic that is legitimate.

At least three deaths and several confirmed infections have been linked to the outbreak. The CDC says the overall risk to the public remains low. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's political party received significant losses in elections last week. NPR's Chandelyse Duster reports.

Britain's center left Labor Party lost more than 1100 seats in local and regional elections. The right wing populist Reform UK Party led by Trump ally Nigel Farage won more than 1300 seats. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he takes responsibility for the Labour Party's defeat and will set out steps for change in the days ahead.

Search and rescue efforts are underway in the eastern part of Indonesia after a volcano erupted. Naina Rao reports from Jakarta.

A rescue mission is underway following a deadly volcanic eruption at Mount Dukono in Indonesia's Halmahera Island. A joint task force comprising Indonesia's national search and rescue agency. The military and local police responded to the emergency after 20 hikers were caught in the eruption, while 17 individuals were rescued safely. The disaster resulted in three confirmed deaths, including one Indonesian woman and two Singaporean nationals. Military officials have directed additional troops to the volcano summit to assist in recovering the remains of the foreign hikers. For NPR News, I'm Naina Rao in Jakarta.

on September 12, 2025. Silverio Villegas Gonzalez, a 38 year old Mexican immigrant, had dropped his children off at daycare and was on his way to work when he was pulled over by ICE agents. Federal officials claim he drove into officers and dragged one of them, causing severe injuries. Video footage shows Gonzalez fleeing, but doesn't show anyone being hit or dragged. In one video, an officer is heard saying his injuries were, quote, nothing major. In a statement, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security called the investigation a political stunt. Illinois Governor J.B. pritzker said in a statement that he hopes long enforcement agencies will deliver justice to Illinoisans. Jasmine Garsd, NPR News, New York.

Baseball hall of Famer and legendary Atlanta Braves manager Bobby Cox has died at the age of 84. Cox led the Braves to 14 consecutive division titles and a World Series championship in 1995 during one of baseball's most dominant eras. He finished his managerial career with more than 2,500 wins, the fourth most in Major League Baseball history. Cox was inducted into the hall of fame in 2014 and was widely respected for helping build the Braves dynasty of the 1990s and early 2000s. This is NPR News.
