In Washington, I'm Windsor Johnston. Spain's health minister says passengers on the Dutch cruise ship at the center of a deadly hantavirus outbreak are disembarking at this hour. 17Americans are among those being flown back to their countries on medical charter flights to be evaluated. The BBC's Guy Hedgeko is in the Canary Islands.
C
According to the Spanish government, everything is going to plan. We have government ministers here, the head of the World health organization and 300 police officers all at the port of overseeing this operation. But there was a bit of drama last night when the president of the Canary Islands, Fernando Pavijo, who had expressed concerns about the arrival of the boat recently. Last night he said he was not going to allow it to arrive at all. He expressed concerns about the possibility that rats might come to land from the boat and therefore infect local people. However, the state authorities have overridden his concerns.

The BBC's Guy Hedgeko reporting. The cruise ship is anchored in the Atlantic Ocean and did not dock. The CDC has activated a level three response. That's the lowest tier of emergency activation for the outbreak. The World Health Organization says the risk to the general public remains low. The new prime minister of Hungary has been sworn into office to. Terry Scholz reports the change is being welcomed in Brussels after European Union relations had suffered under former Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
D
Peter Madur has been sworn in as the new Hungarian prime minister after his Tischa party saw a landslide victory last month in parliamentary elections. In a speech upon taking the oath, Magyar said he would not rule over Hungary but serve it. Madyar formed his own party in 2020 after leaving Orban's ruling Fidesz party. Tisha won 141 of the 200 seats in the parliament last month. The FL of the European Union, shunned by his predecessor, is again hanging in the Hungarian parliament building. Brussels hopes to restore good relations after years of tension with Orban. European Council President Antonio Costa calls it a new chapter in Hungarian history and says the EU is ready to work with the new government. For NPR News, I'm Terri Schultz in Brussels.

Millions of students and universities in K12 districts had their data compromised last week after a hacker took down Canvas. That's a classroom management tool used across the country. NPR's Sequoia Carrillo reports. The attack is raising concerns about student data privacy and schools reliance on private software.
E
Bad actors can get away with using a student's identity, sometimes for years before anyone catches on. And this is just the latest in a recent string of attacks targeting young people, definitely the largest in one spot so far, but dozens of school districts have reported hacks in the last few years.

NPR's Sequoia Carrillo reporting. This is NPR News. The 61st Venice Biennale opened this weekend in a chaotic atmosphere marked by geopolitical strife. NPR's Chloe Veltman reports. The international art event has been hit with protests and resignations in recent weeks.
E
Dozens of artists issued a statement withdrawing from awards consideration at this year's Biennale. The move comes in solidarity with the awards jury, who recently resigned en masse after issuing a statement that they would not award PR to countries charged with crimes against humanity by the International Criminal Court. That includes Israel and Russia. At a protest earlier in the week against Russia's return to the Biennale for the first time since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, art collective Pussy riots stormed the Russian pavilion in bright pink balaclava hats. Thousands of demonstrators took to the streets on Friday to protest Israel's presence over the war in Gaza. Some exhibitions shuttered for hours while artists and curators joined the march. Gas prices across the US Continue to rise as tensions in the Middle east disrupt global oil markets. AAA says the national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is now around $4.50. That's the highest level since 2022. Prices have risen roughly 50 cents over the past two weeks as concerns grow about shipping disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts warm prices could elevated through the summer travel season if instability in the region continues. I'm Windsor Johnston, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
