Details@Capital1.com Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. President Trump is in China, where he received a grand welcome before he started a series of meetings with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. He and Paris Tamara Keith is traveling with the president.
Tamara Keith
President Trump was greeted by Chinese President Xi Jinping in front of the Great hall of the People here in Beijing. There was a military display, a marching band playing the US national anthem, among other songs, and a large group of children waving Chinese and American flags and artificial flowers, jumping up and down, chanting a welcome. President Trump was clearly charmed by the children.

Shortly after arriving at the Great Hall, Trump and his delegation sat down with President Xi. And during opening remark inside the hall, Trump praised the Chinese leader.
President Donald Trump
It's an honor to be with you. It's an honor to be your friend. And the relationship between China and the USA is going to be better than ever before.

President Trump speaking inside the Great hall, where he met with President Xi for about two hours on issues such as trade in Taiwan. The official Xinhua News Agency says President Xi said Taiwan is the most important issue and that if it's not handled well, ties could be pushed to a dangerous place. The Senate once again narrowly defeated a war powers resolution that would have forced President Trump to end the war in Iran. NPR's Eva Berger reports that three Republicans joined almost all Senate Democrats to vote in support of the bill.

The vote is the seventh in an effort largely led by Democrats, to constrain Trump's ability to continue to engage in the conflict with Iran. The resolution was defeated 49 to 50. Senators Lisa Murkowski, Rand Paul and Susan Collins voted with Democrats, while Senator John Fetterman, the Pennsylvania Democrat, joined with Republicans to defeat the bill. The vote came one day after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth told Congress that the cost of the conflict had risen to nearly 30 billion. He asked lawmakers for record 1.5 trillion to fund the Pentagon next year. Eva Berger, NPR News, the Capitol.

Now to Georgia, where Governor Brian Kemp is calling for a special legislative session next month to redraw congressional and state maps. The move is in response to the recent U.S. supreme Court decision on the Voting Rights Act. Rahul Bali of member station WABE reports. These new maps would be for the

the 2028 election camp has faced backlash from fellow Republicans for not stopping early voting that was already underway for the May 19 party primaries to redraw the lines for this year's elections. Georgia Democrats face the likelihood that redistricting will cost them congressional and state legislative seats. An NPR analysis done before the Supreme Court's ruling found a decision affecting the Voting Rights act could put all five Democratic congressional seats in Georgia at risk. Georgia's congressional map has nine Republican leaning seats and five Democratic leaning seats. For NPR News, I'm Raul Bally in Atlanta.

This is NPR News. Democrats have a nominee for Nebraska's 2nd congressional district, the so called blue dot that could help decide control of the House, according to an Associated Press race call. Political organizer Denise Powell is advancing to the November midterm elections and will face Republican Omaha City Councilman Brink. An energy company that drills deep into the earth rung the opening bell on the Nasdaq Wednesday, but it's not an oil and gas company. NPR's Julia Simon reports. Fervo Energy, a geothermal company, raised $1.8 billion in its initial public offering.
Julia Simon
Houston based Fervo Energy sold about 70 million shares, giving it an initial valuation of around 7.6 billion. Geothermal Energy involves digging deep into the earth's surface, and the US has a lot of geothermal potential. Geothermal companies like Fervo are a good bet for investors right now. There's a lot of demand for energy, but the Trump administration has put up roadblocks for solar and wind projects. Yet the administration looks favorably on geothermal. Geothermal is another way to drill, baby, drill, and it provides reliable energy with far less climate pollution than fossil fuels. Julia Simon, NPR News.
