Island Railroad in New York are now on strike. The union wanted raises between 4.5 and 5%, but it said the Metropolitan Transit Authority refused to hike pay that much without reducing health care contributions for new workers to offset the cost of raises. Israel says an airstrike Friday targeted one of the architects of the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. Military officials say the leader of the Hamas military wing, but it's unknown whether he was killed in the strike. Two Americans who've never won a golf major, Alex sMalley and Maverick McNeely, now share the lead halfway through the PGA Championship outside Philadelphia. But as Greg Eklund reports, there are several former major champions also in contention.

One of them is Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland, who with a win would be one step closer to the elusive Grand Slam. In other words, winning all four majors this year. Tiger woods came the closest by winning four straight majors over a two year period. After a mediocre opening round, McElroy shot a three under par 67 on Friday at five back.
D
I do feel like I'm right in the tournament, and that's really what I wanted to do today, was to just get myself back in it, and I feel like I've done that.
E
But the contenders are bunched together and McIlroy is tied for 30th entering the third round. Defending champion Scotty Scheffler of Dallas, the world's top ranked golfer, is only two strokes on off the lead. For NPR News, I'm Greg Ecklin, Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.
