In Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. Taiwan is pushing back after President Trump said he hasn't decided whether to go ahead with a major weapons sale to the island. Ashish Valentine reports from Taipei. Trump's hesitation worries many that he may roll back American support in return for concessions from China.

Taiwan's presidential spokesperson Karen Guo says US Arms sales don't just keep Taiwan safe, they help preserve stability throughout the region. Her statement came after Trump, fresh from a summit with China's Xi Jinping, told reporters he hadn't made up his mind on a planned $14 billion US weapons package for Taipei that awaits his approval. China opposes US Arms sales to the island democracy, which it claims as its own territory. Trump described the sale as a very good negotiating chip and also suggested he may speak directly about it with Taiwan's President, Lai Ching Te. For NPR News, I'm Ashish Valentine in Taipei.

The DOJ is now framing this as a civil rights issue.

Groups like Gun Owners of America have welcomed the DOJ's recent creation of a Second Amendment section inside its civil rights division, which is now suing the city of Denver for restricting access to firearms such as AR15s. On the gun control side, Adam Skaggs of Giffords Law center says the DOJ may boost efforts to roll back such restrictions.

The Maldives Independent newspaper reports that 43 year old Staff Sergeant Mohammed Mahoudi died while participating in a search and rescue mission for the missing Italians. The paper reported that he had undertaken multiple rescue missions in his career, including diving to depths of 230ft. The associated Press reports that one man, a diving instructor, was found dead near the mouth of a cave some 160ft below surface on Thursday, but another four Italians have not been found. The AP reports that the other divers may be in or around the cave, which lies off the Wavo Atoll. It's unclear why the divers went so deep. The limit for recreational diving in the Maldives is about 100ft. De Hadid, NPR News.

In Italy, at least eight people were injured when the driver of a car plowed into a group of pedestrians on the main shopping street in Modena today. The mayor says four of them are in serious condition. Officials say the car, traveling at a high speed, eventually rammed into a storefront and the driver then fled on foot. Authorities say he's a 31 year old Italian man who lived in the area. He was apprehended, though, after several people blocked him as he tried to flee. And he is being questioned. But so far there is no word on a motive. I'm Jeanine Herbst, and you're listening to NPR News from Washington.
