Live from NPR News, I'm Dale Wilman. President Trump is defending his controversial comment on not thinking about American's finances during talks with Iran. As NPR's Franco Ordonez reports, Trump is calling it a perfect statement.
Franco Ordonez
Before leaving for China, the president drew some blowback for his answer to a question about the extent Americans finances were motivating him to make a deal on Iran.
Donald Trump
I don't think about Americans financial situation. I don't think about anybody. I think about one thing. We cannot let Iran have a nuclear weapon. That's all.
Franco Ordonez
But never one to back down, Trump told Fox News that it was a perfect statement and that he'd say it again.
Donald Trump
And that question was a fake question and they didn't put my full answer. I totally care. Look, I inherited high prices.
Franco Ordonez
Trump insists this is short term pain, adding that Americans are fine paying a little more in order to keep Iran from having a nuclear weapon. Franco Ordonez, NPR News.

Crowds gathered on the National Mall Sunday for a Trump backed prayer event commemorating America's 250th birthday. The event has drawn questions over the separation of church and state. NPR's Chandelyse Duster has more.
Chandelyse Duster
The prayer gathering on the National Mall included praise and worship songs and remarks from members of the Trump administration that were met with cheers, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio. House Speaker Mike Johnson also led the audience in prayer. In a video message, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard said people and leaders should humble themselves before God.
Tulsi Gabbard
Too often leaders in this world have our eyes covered by pride borne out of our relative power, fame or authority. We lose sight of the fact that we are tiny and our time on this planet is extremely short.
Chandelyse Duster
President Trump did not attend the event, but delivered a video message reading biblical scripture. The event has been criticized by the Faith Coalition Interfaith alliance, which called the gathering, quote, an attempt to turn the United States into an authoritarian theocracy. Tulsi Gabbard
I don't know what a motive is. I don't know what motive would drive anybody to come and drive around senselessly in this city, in multiple parts of the city shooting.
Luz Marina Lozano
Davis says this is still an active investigation and police hope to learn more in the coming days. I'm Luz Morena Lozano in Austin.
