Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. The White House says China will purchase at least $17 billion in agricultural products annually from the U.S. nPR's Franco Ordonez reports. The deal comes after President Trump's visit to China.
Franco Ordonez
Flying back to the US From China last week, President Trump told reporters that farmers would be pleased with the deals he had reached.
President Donald Trump
The farmers are going to be very happy. They're going to be buying billions of dollars of soybeans.
Franco Ordonez
The White House says the agricultural agreement, which goes until 2028, is in addition to commitments to buy US soybeans that had already been reached. In a fact sheet, the White House touted that Trump quote, negotiated a sweeping package of commitments that'll drive high paying American jobs and open new markets for U.S. goods. The White House says China also agreed to purchase 200American made airplanes made by Boeing for Chinese airlines. Franco Ordonez, NPR News.

But China hasn't confirmed any specific purchases. China says the leaders agreed to expand agricultural trade through cuts in tariffs and market access issues. Crowds gathered on the National Mall yesterday for a prayer event backed by the Trump administration to celebrate the nation's 250th birthday. This is drawing questions over the separation of church and state. The event appeared to highlight mostly evangelical Christian themes. One Orthodox Rabb rabbi spoke along with two top Catholic clergy. There were no speakers from other religious faith such as Islam or Buddhism. President Trump delivered video remarks reading a passage from the Old Testament book of Second Chronicles why has the Lord done
President Donald Trump
thus to this land and to this house, and it shall be answered? Because they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, which brought them forth out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods, worship them and serve them. Therefore has he brought all this evil upon them.

This biblical passage discusses heavenly reaction if King Solomon and the Jewish people failed to follow the instructions of God. Three suspects are in custody in Austin, Texas. That's after a dozen shootings and multiple car thefts across the city over the weekend. From member station kut, Luz Moreno Lozano has more.
Luz Moreno Lozano
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis says the shootings began around 4pm Saturday and continued into Sunday. At least four people were injured, one with serious injuries. The incident spurred shelter and placed orders across parts of Austin Sunday afternoon. Davis says the shootings appear to be random.
Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis
I don't know what a motive is. I don't know what motive would drive anybody to come and drive around senselessly in this city in multiple parts of the city shooting.
Luz Moreno Lozano
Davis says this is still an active investigation and police hope to learn more in the coming days. I'm Luz Moreno Lozano in Austin.

This is npr. Labor unions in South Korea are in last ditch negotiations with corporation Samsung Electronics. Some 50,000 workers could go on strike Thursday if no agreement is reached. NPR's Anthony Kuhn reports from Seoul. A strike could aggravate a global shortage of memory chips.
Anthony Kuhn
Samsung filed for a court injunction to stop the strike. The court said workers could go on strike, but they must ensure production safety and may not occupy key facilities. The union said they'll negotiate in good faith, but if talks fail, the court ruling won't keep them from striking. The unions want fixed performance bonuses equal to 15% of Samsung's operating profits, which grew by more than 700% in the first quarter of this year due to high prices for memory chips. South Korea's traditionally pro labor president Lee Jae Myung posted on social media that corporate management's rights should be respected as much as labor rights. Anthony Kuhn, NPR news, Seoul.
