Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Ryland Barton. Former Navy SEAL officer Ed Gallrein has defeated incumbent Northern Kentucky Republican Congressman Thomas Massie after President Trump pushed to oust Massie in his campaign to defeat his perceived enemies in his own party. That's according to a race call from the Associated Press. Massie led the fight to get the Jeffrey Epstein files released. He's opposed to Trump's involvement in foreign conflicts and he was one of the Republican votes against Trump's signature tax and spending package last year. The House primary race was one of the most expensive in US History. Gallerin will face Democrat Melissa Strange in the general election. Republicans control the Senate, but they just advanced a Democratic resolution to force President Trump to end the Iran war. Louisiana Republican Senator Bill Cassidy was a crucial vote. He was ousted by Trump's favored candidate in his primary over the weekend. NPR's Eric McDaniel has more.

Presidents have 60 days to consult Congress on military action. President Trump's war on Iran has extended well beyond that. And now, after a string of unsuccessful measures, the Senate passed the latest Democratic led proposal that would force the war to end. Senators Rand Paul, Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski had come to support those efforts. And now Senator Cassidy, fresh off a stage stinging primary loss orchestrated by President Trump, join them. Here's Cassidy conceding his race last weekend.
Ron Klain
Our country is not about one individual. It is about the welfare of all Americans and it is about our Constitution.
Eric McDaniel
Eyes are on the House, where a similar measure failed on a tie vote just last week. Eric McDaniel, NPR News, the Capitol.

The NAACP is calling on black athletes, alumni, fans and the general public to boycott the athletic programs. Universities in states that aim to redistrict longtime black lawmakers. If successful, the move could deplete rosters for powerhouse football and basketball programs across the SEC and ACC athletic conferences. The effort comes as civil rights activists try to apply pressure to Republican led state legislatures through mass protests and economic boycotts. The death toll of the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Uganda continues to climb days after the World Health Organization declared it a public health emergency. Of Ron Klain was the White House Ebola response coordinator under President Obama. He says the risk of spread to the US Is small, but the more it spreads, the more the risk goes up.
Ron Klain
It's a different part of Africa and it's a different strain of Ebola. This is a strain of Ebola for which we have no vaccine and no treatments. And it's in a part of Africa which is conflict laden and is adjacent to massive gatherings of refugees in South Sudan. So it's a highly dangerous place for this to happen.

Former White House Ebola response coordinator Ron Klain. The US Stock market gave back more of its record setting rally today. This is NPR News from Washington. Nations across Asia are pushing for the use of more biofuels in transportation in order to slash dependence on fossil fuels. Asia is hardest hit by the ongoing energy shock caused by the Iran war. India is considering allowing vehicles to run on 85% or even 100% ethanol. Experts are split on the climate benefit of these fuels, stressing that other forms of renewable energy would likely be more efficient. Workers at the nation's largest commuter railroad were back on the job today after a three day strike. The unions representing the Long island railroad workforce came to an agreement with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority late Monday. From member station WNYC in New York, Stephen Nessen reports.
Stephen Nessen
The strike was the first one in over 30 years. The LIRR workers had been without a raise for three years. The union was in a dispute with the MTA over a pay bump in the last year of their four year contract. The MTA argued it wanted an end to the rule that engineers get paid double for driving an electric and diesel locomotive in the same shift. While the details of the final agreement have not been released, LIRR President Rob Freeh says it's a good deal for both parties.
Ron Klain
The unions had their stance, but we worked through it and we were able to come up with a compromise that works for everyone.
Stephen Nessen
The unions still have to ratify the new contract. For NPR News, I'm Stephen Nessen in New York.
