In Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. The liberal icon and former Massachusetts Democratic congressman Barney Frank has died at his home. That's according to a close friend who confirmed his death to member station WBUR in Boston. Frank was 86. He had been receiving hospice care for congestive heart failure. He was the first gay member of Congress to come out publicly, which he did in 1987. Frank explained he he had supported efforts to fight all forms of discrimination against the LGBTQ community for years.
Barney Frank
Throughout the 70s, I became more and more an active and prominent leader on gay rights, and I was increasingly depressed by the disparity between my advocating the rights for everybody else and then denying myself any chance to participate in it.

He spoke there to NPR's FRESH AIR. In 2015, to mark Cuban Independence Day, Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a Spanish language message to the Cuban people today. NPR's Ada Peralta reports. It comes as the U.S. ratchets up pressure against the Cuban government.
Ada Peralta
Secretary of State Marco Rubio says Cuba is suffering not because of a US Blockade, but because their government has placed the good of a few insiders ahead of the good of the Cuban people. Rubio said the only thing in the way of a better future for Cuba is the people who control their country. If owning your own business, business, having the right to vote is possible outside Cuba, he said, why is it not possible for you inside Cuba? Rubio spoke as the Justice Department prepared to announce an indictment against former Cuban President Raul Castro. Cuba has said the US Is simply trying to justify an illegal and inhumane military intervention against Cuba. Ada Pralta, NPR News, Miami.

Primary election results are coming in. The most closely watched was the seat held by Kentucky Republican Congressman Thomas Massie to Ed Gilrein, a challenger backed by President Trump. Massie had worked to get the Epstein files released. He also opposed President Trump's military operations. The Republican primary for the US Senate race in Georgia is headed to a runoff. Georgia Public Broadcasting's Sarah Kalis reports.
Sarah Kalis
U.S. representative Mike Collins was the first to qualify for the runoff. He emphasized his conservative record in Congress and positioned himself as a pro Trump candidate throughout the campaign. Former college football coach Derek Dooley also qualified for the runoff. He marketed himself as a political outsider and has had the backing of popular Georgia Governor Brian Kemp throughout his campaign. Kemp has sometimes been at odds with President Donald Trump and resisted Trump's efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results in the state. The runoff will be held June 16. Trump hasn't endorsed a candidate yet. The winner of the runoff will face off against incumbent Democratic US Senator Jon Ossoff in November. For NPR News, I'm Sarah Kalis, and

you're listening to NPR News. The Justice Department says the federal government will drop any tax claim that's outstanding against President Trump, his sons and his private organization. The agency says this is part of a legal settlement reached this week over the release of Trump's tax returns. The first part of the controversial settlement creates a nearly $1.8 billion fund. The money is intended to compensate people allegedly targeted by the Biden administration. Critics are already describing this fund as deeply corrupt. Parts of the west coast are in the midst of a record breaking marine heat wave. As NPR's Nate Rott reports, the effects of this heat are washing up on California's coasts.

Temperatures have been 3 to 7 degrees Fahrenheit, hotter than normal along most of the California coast since winter, disrupting food webs. And with an El Nino likely in the months ahead, more heat may be on the horizon. Nate Rott, NPR News.
