Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Shea Stevens. President Trump has unveiled the concept for his proposed Golden Dome missile defense system. Trump says his administration has chosen the architecture for the missile shield that will be integrated with the nation's current defense capabilities.
Unnamed Reporter
Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they are launched from space.

Trump says the proposed Republican spending plan calls for $25 billion to help jumpstart construction of the missile shield. President Trump is set to meet with South African leader Cyril Mamaphosa today at the White House. The meeting comes after the administration welcomed a group of white Africa who claim they were victims of racial persecution. Ramaphosa has rejected allegations of genocide and widespread seizures of white owned land in his country. Data from the South African government shows most of the land in the majority black nation is owned by white Africaners, who make up 7% of the population. The Doge team, led by billionaire Elon Musk, has ended five surveys conducted by the U.S. census Bureau. Details from NPR's Han Zi Lo Wang.

It's not clear which federal government surveys Doge has ended, but in a social media post on X, Doge called them wasteful and pointed to their questions about people's Internet usage and alcohol consumption. Both topics have long been tracked by some of the surveys the Census Bureau conducts to produce statistics to help guide policymaking and research. That includes a survey of inmates in local jails, which is the only national source of detailed information on alcohol use and other characteristics of people incarcerated in jails. The bureau did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comment. Like other federal agencies, it's been under pressure from the Trump administration to shrink its workforce. It's raised concerns about its ability to produce accurate 2030 census results that are set to be used to redraw voting maps in the next decade. Han Zi Luang, NPR News, Washington.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be on the ground in St. Louis today to survey tornado damage. As St. Louis Public Radio's Hiba Ahmed reports, city officials have shared more details about what happened there last Friday.
Kara Spencer
During a press conference on Monday, St. Louis Mayor Kara Spencer said the tornado siren system failed to warn residents to take shelter.
Mike Kehoe
There was a failure, a human failure, a failure in protocol to get the sirens up and running to let the community know that there was a massive weather event hitting our community.
Kara Spencer
The tornado, which had wind speeds of up to 150mph and stretched at least a mile wide, tore through residential areas, leaving homes and local businesses in rubble. Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe says after FEMA completes its survey, he will ask for a major disaster declaration from President Donald Trump, which would open up federal assistance. For NPR News, I'm HIBBETT AHMED in St. Louis.

U.S. futures are flat in after hours trading on Wall Street. This is npr. A new salmonella outbreak is being traced to a Florida grower whose tainted cucumbers were linked to more than 500 illnesses in nearly three dozen states last year. At least 26 current illnesses in 15 states have been traced to cucumbers from Bednar growers and distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales. Last year's outbreak was traced to untreated canal water at farms used by Bednor. The cucumbers were distributed to restaurants, wholesalers and retailers. Between April 29 and May 19 of this year, for the first time in 50 years, emergency room doctors will have a new framework for assessing people with head injuries. From member station KQED in San Francisco, April Demboski has more on the system outlined in the journal Lancet Neurology.
Jeff Manley
Current Assessment of Traumatic Brain Injury filters patients into three mild, moderate or severe. UC San Francisco neurosurgeon Jeff Manley says that's way too vague. He's seen severe patients taken off life support who could have recovered and mild patients sent home with nothing six weeks later.

They've got pounding headaches. They've got problems with their visual system. They're not sleeping well, so there's nothing mild about that.
Jeff Manley
The new framework recommends using blood tests, CT scans and patient medical history to make diagnosis more detailed and precise. For NPR News, I'm April Demboski in San Francisco.

Host: Shea Stevens
Description: The latest news in five minutes. Updated hourly.
Overview:
President Donald Trump has introduced his administration's plan for a new missile defense initiative named the "Golden Dome." This system is designed to integrate seamlessly with existing national defense mechanisms, enhancing the United States' ability to intercept incoming missiles from various global and extraterrestrial origins.
Key Points:
Unveiling of the Golden Dome:
In a recent announcement, President Trump revealed the architectural framework for the Golden Dome missile defense system. According to Shea Stevens, "[Trump] says his administration has chosen the architecture for the missile shield that will be integrated with the nation's current defense capabilities" (00:18).
Capabilities:
An unnamed reporter highlighted the system's advanced capabilities: "Once fully constructed, the Golden Dome will be capable of intercepting missiles even if they are launched from other sides of the world and even if they are launched from space" (00:35).
Funding and Construction:
The proposed Republican spending plan allocates $25 billion to kickstart the construction of the missile shield. This substantial investment underscores the administration's commitment to bolstering national security through cutting-edge defense technologies (00:46).
Overview:
President Trump is scheduled to meet with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa at the White House. This meeting follows tensions arising from allegations by a group of white South Africans claiming victimization and racial persecution in the country.
Key Points:
Allegations of Persecution:
The administration has extended a warm welcome to a contingent of white South Africans who assert that they have faced racial persecution. However, President Ramaphosa has firmly denied these claims, stating, "I reject allegations of genocide and widespread seizures of white-owned land in my country" (00:46).
Land Ownership Statistics:
Data from the South African government indicates that land ownership is predominantly held by white Afrikaners, who constitute only 7% of the nation's population. This statistic challenges the narrative of widespread land seizures and underscores the complexity of land distribution issues in South Africa (00:46).
Doge Team and Census Surveys:
The Doge team, led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, has discontinued five surveys conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. NPR's Han Zi Lu Wang reports that while the specific surveys terminated are unclear, Doge criticized them as "wasteful," particularly targeting questions related to Internet usage and alcohol consumption. These surveys have historically provided valuable data for policymaking and research, including insights into alcohol use among incarcerated individuals.
Overview:
A severe tornado struck St. Louis last Friday, causing extensive damage to residential areas and local businesses. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is currently conducting assessments on the ground to evaluate the extent of the destruction.
Key Points:
Failure of Tornado Siren System:
During a press conference, St. Louis Mayor Kara Spencer disclosed that the tornado siren system failed to alert residents in time. "There was a failure, a human failure, a failure in protocol to get the sirens up and running to let the community know that there was a massive weather event hitting our community," stated Mike Kehoe, Missouri Governor (02:29; 02:35).
Tornado Details:
The tornado exhibited wind speeds reaching up to 150 mph and had a width of at least one mile. It caused significant destruction, leaving homes and businesses in ruins (02:36).
Federal Response:
Governor Kehoe mentioned that following FEMA's survey of the damage, he intends to request a major disaster declaration from President Trump. This declaration will facilitate the provision of federal assistance to the affected areas (02:48).
Overview:
A salmonella outbreak traced back to cucumbers from a Florida grower has resulted in over 500 illnesses across nearly three dozen states. The contamination is attributed to the use of untreated canal water at the farms managed by Bednor Growers.
Key Points:
Outbreak Statistics:
Last year's outbreak implicated cucumbers distributed by Fresh Start Produce Sales, affecting at least 26 individuals in 15 states. The contaminated produce was distributed to a wide network, including restaurants, wholesalers, and retailers.
Source of Contamination:
Investigations revealed that the cucumbers were tainted due to the use of untreated canal water at Bednor Growers' farms. This oversight in water treatment protocols led to the widespread distribution of contaminated produce (03:10).
Industry Impact:
The incident underscores the critical importance of stringent agricultural practices and water treatment to prevent future outbreaks.
Overview:
For the first time in 50 years, emergency room doctors will adopt a new framework for evaluating patients with head injuries. This advancement aims to provide a more nuanced and accurate assessment compared to the traditional methods.
Key Points:
Current Assessment Limitations:
The existing system categorizes traumatic brain injuries into three broad categories: mild, moderate, or severe. However, this approach has been criticized for its lack of precision. Jeff Manley, a neurosurgeon at UC San Francisco, observed, "that's way too vague. He's seen severe patients taken off life support who could have recovered and mild patients sent home with nothing six weeks later" (04:05).
Proposed Improvements:
The new framework advocates for the use of blood tests, CT scans, and comprehensive patient medical histories to achieve a more detailed and accurate diagnosis. This method addresses the shortcomings of the previous system by providing clearer guidelines and reducing the risk of misclassification.
Expert Insights:
An unnamed medical expert highlighted the severity of head injuries that were previously categorized as mild, noting symptoms such as "pounding headaches," "problems with their visual system," and "difficulty sleeping," which indicate that these cases require more serious attention (04:25).
Publication and Endorsement:
The new assessment framework was outlined in the journal Lancet Neurology and is set to be implemented across emergency departments nationwide, marking a significant advancement in medical protocols for head injury treatment (04:05).
Overview:
Financial markets exhibited stability in after-hours trading, with U.S. futures remaining flat on Wall Street. In contrast, Asia Pacific markets saw a mostly positive trend.
Key Points:
Wall Street:
U.S. futures did not show significant movement, indicating a period of consolidation or uncertainty among investors (03:10; 04:44).
Asia Pacific Markets:
Shares in the Asia Pacific region are mostly higher, reflecting investor confidence or positive economic indicators in those markets (04:44).
Overview:
An advisory regarding a salmonella outbreak has been issued, linking the illness to cucumbers from Florida-based Bednor Growers. Consumers are advised to exercise caution when purchasing and consuming cucumbers from affected batches.
Key Points:
FDA Involvement:
The Food and Drug Administration is actively monitoring the situation and has worked with local health departments to trace the source of the outbreak.
Preventive Measures:
Consumers are encouraged to thoroughly wash cucumbers before consumption and to stay informed about recalls or safety notices related to produce.
