In Washington, I'm Jeanine Herbst. Russia has signed a military agreement with Afghanistan's ruling Taliban government, but details of the deal with remain murky. NPR's Charles Mainz has more from Moscow.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of a security forum outside Moscow earlier this week. While neither side offered details, both suggested in comments to media that their aim was to deepen relations. Russia is currently the only country that recognizes the Taliban as Afghanistan's legitimate government since it returned to power following the withdrawal of US NATO forces in 2021. To do so, the Kremlin removed the Islamic group from its official terrorism list, and the two set aside tensions dating back to the Soviet invas. President Trump says he'll decide soon on a proposal to extend a ceasefire with Iran for another 60 days and reopen the Strait of Hormuz as peace talks continue. The two sides are far apart on core issues, and Iran says a deal must include Lebanon. We're where Israel is ramping up its attacks despite a ceasefire. NPR's Jane Araf has more from Beirut.

Iran has said any ceasefire with the US has to include an end to the war in Lebanon, where Israel has invaded and is fighting Hezbollah, the militant group that Iran backs. In the past week, Israel has taken over more territory in southern Lebanon, and it's intensified strikes. Almost the entire south has been displaced. Just to give you an indication of this, UN Peacekeepers who track cease fire violations say since last Sunday, Israeli forces have launched more than 3,000 strikes.

A North Carolina grand jury charged Comey last month with threatening President Trump based on an Instagram post of seashells. Spelling out 864786 is slang for getting rid of something. Trump is the 47th president. The indictment said the image was, quote, a serious expression of an intent to do harm to the president. Now, Matthew Petracca, the lead federal prosecutor on the case, has stepped aside, according to a court filing, it shows he has been replaced. It didn't explain why. Comey says his post wasn't a call to violence, saying to him 86 was an expression of wanting to be done with something. Comey's lawyers have said they intend to file a vindictive prosecution motion. Law enforcement officers in New York can no longer wear a mask while on duty. The state's governor signed a bill into law this week saying it applies to local, state and federal officers who are operating in New York. This is npr. The restaurant industry is facing pressure from rising inflation, worker shortages and the war in Iran. As NPR's Joe Hernandez reports, that prompted one restaurant in Austin, Texas, to let diners pay whatever they want one night a week.
