Anthony Kuhn
In a statement on its website, China's Foreign Ministry said Hegseth's speech was provocative, smeared China, and peddled a Cold War vision of confrontation between opposing camps. In a speech to the annual Shangri La dialogue, Hegseth said the US Is strengthening its deterrence of China by, for example, deploying anti ship missiles to the Luzon Strait near Taiwan. In April, China's Foreign Ministry said the US Is turning the Asia Pacific region into a powder keg, ignoring the wishes of Asian nations for peace and development. The ministry says it lodged diplomatic representations with the US Over Hegseth's speech. Anthony Kuhn in PR News, Singapore.

In Gaza today, the Israeli military says it's investigating a report that its forces fired on people on their way to food distribution sites. Palestinian health officials say at least 32 people were killed. Congress returns tomorrow from its Memorial Day recess. The Senate is expected to take up a huge tax cut and spending bill passed by the House last month. It would spend more money on defense and less on Medicaid and other programs that benefit lower income Americans. Wealthier Americans would benefit more from reduced taxes. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says the bill would add trillions of dollars to the national debt over 10 years. Russ Vote, the director of the Office of Management and Budget disagrees.
Russ Vote
This bill doesn't increase the deficit or hurt the debt. In fact, it lowers it by $1.4 trillion. What some of the watchdogs have done is they have used CBO's artificial baseline, which doesn't allow and assume that current tax law will be extended because of sunsets that are in the law.

He was interviewed on cnn. The Trump administration is calling for the reorganization of the Census Bureau and two other agencies that release key economic indicators. NPR's Hansi Luong reports.
Hansi Luong
The more than a thousand page document offers no details, but says the president's budget proposes to reorganize the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis and the Census Bureau at the Department of Commerce. The Commerce Department's Public affairs office did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Merging those three agencies into one has been suggested by conservative groups behind the Project 2025 blueprint for governing. President Trump's proposal comes days after the Census Bureau confirmed it's lost more than 1,000 employees as part of the administration's push to slash the federal government. It's now planning to scale back some of its work on producing statistics for the country. Many data users are concerned about the federal government's ability to produce accurate headcounts for redistributing political representation and indicators for monitoring the US Economy. In this episode, significant attention is given to the strained relations between the United States and China. Following a speech by U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth at the annual Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore, China's Foreign Ministry issued a strong rebuttal. Hegseth warned of threats posed by China, highlighting actions such as the deployment of anti-ship missiles to the Luzon Strait near Taiwan as examples of the U.S. strengthening its deterrence against China.
China's Foreign Ministry labeled Hegseth's speech as "provocative, smeared China, and peddled a Cold War vision of confrontation between opposing camps" ([00:32]). The ministry further criticized the U.S. for turning the Asia-Pacific region into a "powder keg" and alleged that the U.S. is disregarding the desires of Asian nations for peace and development. In response, China has lodged diplomatic representations with the United States regarding the content and tone of Hegseth's remarks.

The Israeli military is currently investigating allegations that its forces may have fired upon individuals en route to food distribution sites in Gaza. As Congress prepares to reconvene after the Memorial Day recess, attention turns to a substantial tax cut and spending bill previously passed by the House. The Senate is expected to deliberate on this bill, which proposes increased defense spending while reducing allocations for Medicaid and other programs that support lower-income Americans. Wealthier citizens stand to benefit more significantly from the proposed tax reductions.
The Congressional Budget Office (CBO), a nonpartisan entity, has warned that the bill could contribute trillions of dollars to the national debt over the next decade. However, Russ Vote, the Director of the Office of Management and Budget, offered a counterperspective during an interview on CNN. He asserted, “This bill doesn't increase the deficit or hurt the debt. In fact, it lowers it by $1.4 trillion. What some of the watchdogs have done is they have used CBO's artificial baseline, which doesn't allow and assume that current tax law will be extended because of sunsets that are in the law” ([01:56]).

The Trump administration is advocating for a significant reorganization within the Department of Commerce, proposing the merger of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and the Census Bureau. This initiative is outlined in a comprehensive, yet sparse, thousand-page document accompanying the president's budget. The Commerce Department has yet to provide detailed comments on the proposal.
This move aligns with suggestions from conservative groups promoting the Project 2025 blueprint for governance. The timing coincides with reported staff reductions at the Census Bureau, which has lost over 1,000 employees amid efforts to downsize the federal government. Consequently, the agency is now considering scaling back its statistical work, raising concerns among data users about the federal government's capacity to produce accurate population counts essential for political representation and economic monitoring.

NOAA Director Mike Brennan emphasized the importance of preparedness, advising residents to assemble disaster kits, be aware of evacuation orders, and heed local emergency officials' instructions. He highlighted that most hurricane-related fatalities result from inland flooding, which can occur far from coastal areas.

Julia Lopez Ramirez from Spain recorded the best score of the day with a 68, trailing Stark by one shot.
