Live from NPR News in Washington, I'm Korva Coleman. The FBI is helping authorities in Boulder, Colorado, investigate a man accused of attacking a peaceful march yesterday. A group was holding its weekly vigil to support Israeli hostages held in Gaza. The FBI special agent in charge, Mark McCulloch says the suspect apparently attacked and burned eight people.
NPR Reporter
Witnesses are reporting that the subject used a makeshift flamethrower and threw an incendiary device into the crowd. The suspect was heard to yell free Palestine during the attack.

Officials have arrested 45 year old Mohamed Solomon in the attack. They're investigating this as terrorism and believe the suspect acted alone. In Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is praying for the victims. President Trump says he will double tariffs on imports of aluminum and steel to 50%. He says the increased tariffs start on Wednesday on Wall street and premarket trading stock futures are lower. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth attended an annual defense forum over the weekend in Singapore. In his speech, he warned China that there would be disastrous consequences if it invades the Democratic island of Taiwan. NPR's Emily Feng reports.
Pete Hegseth
Hegseth issued this warning about potential Chinese military actions around Taiwan.

The threat China poses is real and it could be imminent.
Pete Hegseth
Hegseth's warning that a Chinese attack on Taiwan could be imminent is one of several often conflicting predictions made by senior American defense officials. Admiral Philip Davidson told Congress in 2021, before he retired as head of the Indo Pacific Command, that China might manifest its threats towards Taiwan by 2027, a window his successor, Admiral Samuel Pap, and other intelligence agencies have dismissed. And President Trump said last year while campaigning that he does not think China's Xi Jinping will provoke him over Taiwan because the Chinese leader, quote, knows I am crazy, using an expletive. Results are in from Poland's weekend presidential runoff election. Conservative candidate Kara Noski has narrowly won victory. As Esme Nicholson reports in Berlin, a record number of voters turned out to cast their ballots.

Poland's electoral commission says Karol Navrosky has defeated the liberal Warsaw Mayor Rafa Trakovsky by less than a percentage point, securing 50.89% of the vote. Navrosky, whose strongman image has gained him approval from the Trump administration, campaigned on a promise to defend traditional Polish values. His opponent, Tchaikovsky, had vowed to push ahead with Prime Minister Donald Tusk's plans to reinstate judicial independence and liberalise abortion laws. But with major veto powers, Navrosky is expected to block Tusk's government in pursuit of a more nationalist agenda. For NPR News, I'm Esme Nicholson in Berlin.

And you're listening to NPR News from Washington. A Ukrainian delegation is in Istanbul for what's supposed to be the latest round of direct peace talks with Russian officials. This comes after Ukraine said it attacked five Russian air bases over the weekend. The bases are spread widely across the vast Russian nation. Meanwhile, Russia launched nearly 500 attack drones into Ukraine yesterday. In professional golf, Sweden's Maya Stark has won the US Women's Open. From member station wuwm, Chuck Kuernbach reports that Stark's two shot victory happened at the Erin Hills Course near Milwaukee.

Stark shot a final round even par 72 to hold off top US player Nelly Korda and Japan's Ryo Takeda. The 25 year old Stark earns $2.4 million for her victory. A reporter asked what she'll do with the money.

Maybe out of my studio apartment could be one thing.

Overall, for the four day tournament, Stark was seven shots under par. It's her first win of a major US Competition. She played collegiate golf at Oklahoma State University. For NPR News, I'm Chuck Kwernbach in Erin.

However, this perspective is part of a larger debate within U.S. defense circles. Additionally, President Trump has expressed skepticism about China's intentions:
President Trump: "I do not think China's Xi Jinping will provoke me over Taiwan because the Chinese leader, quote, knows I am crazy."

A Ukrainian delegation has arrived in Istanbul for what is intended to be the latest round of direct peace talks with Russian officials. This development comes in the wake of escalated military actions between the two nations.
Ukraine recently announced attacks on five Russian air bases spread across the vast Russian territory. In retaliation, Russia launched nearly 500 attack drones into Ukraine yesterday, further intensifying the conflict.
These reciprocal strikes underscore the fragile and volatile situation in the region, with both sides seeking strategic advantages while negotiations continue.

Maya Stark: "Maybe out of my studio apartment could be one thing."
Throughout the four-day tournament at the Erin Hills Course near Milwaukee, Stark maintained an impressive seven-shot lead, marking her first win in a major US competition. She honed her skills at Oklahoma State University before rising to prominence in the professional circuit.
