May reports, well, right now he's facing at least one federal hate crime charge based on the planned nature of the attack. And more could be coming because authorities say the materials he used to make the Molotov cocktails weren't manufactured in Colorado, and that could make this an interstate crime. Now, police say he told them that he used the cocktails because he had previously tried to buy a gun but was not legally able to do so. In addition to the federal charge, the Boulder DA's filed 42 counts against Suleiman. Those charges range from attempted murder to the possession of an incendiary device, and he's currently being held on a $10 million bond.

The Supreme Court has declined to hear a major constitutional challenge to state laws in Maryland and Rhode island that ban semi automatic weapons like the AR15 and the AK47 used by the military. NPR's Nina Totenberg reports.

It takes the votes of four justices to grant review of a lower court decision. And in today's case, only the court's three most conservative justices, Thomas Alito and Gorsuch, voted to hear the appeal. Justice Kavanaugh, who declined to provide the fourth vote needed to hear the case next term, nonetheless filed a statement calling the lower court decision questionable. He gave no reason why he voted against hearing the case, except to say that there will be other similar cases before the court soon, as he put it, should assist in making the ultimate decision on the AR15. The second round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine and Istanbul failed to reach any progress towards a ceasefire. However, the two sides did agree to swap the remains of thousands of war dead, as well as seriously wounded troops and soldiers under the age of 25. NPR Shamana Kakis reports from Kyiv, where Ukraine claims it hit more than 40 Russian warplanes deep in Russian territory. And Sunday's wide ranging drone attack in.

A statement, the head of Ukraine's security service, Lt. Gen. Vassal Malyuk, said Russia uses these planes to bomb Ukraine nearly every night. He wrote on social media, our strikes will continue as long as Russia terrorizes Ukrainians with missiles and shahed drones. In this weekend's operation, officially dubbed Spiderweb, Malyuk explained that it was a task that took more than 18 months to plan. It involved hiding drones inside the roofs of wooden cabins placed on trucks. Mali said the roofs were opened remotely, remotely and the drones flew out to hit the Russian bombers. Russia acknowledges the bombers were hit but is disputing the scale. Joanna Kakissis, NPR News, Kiev.

This is npr. Vehicles from Ford, Volkswagen, Volvo and Chrysler were all recalled last month because of problems with the rear view camera, which has been required in all new cars in the U.S. since 2018. Here's NPR's Camila Domonoski.

More than a million Ford vehicles built in the last four years have a software error that could cause the images to freeze or be delayed. Meanwhile, many Volvos over the same time frame were reporting missing images. Some of Chrysler's Ram promasters, too, and some newer Volkswagen SUVs were struggling with distorted rear view images. In some cases, a simple software update will fix it, while some owners will need to visit a dealership. As always with safety recalls, the repairs are free. You can check if your car is covered by any recall on the government's safer car app. Camila Domonosky, NPR News.

The Homeland Security Department has removed a list of sanctuary jurisdictions from its website. The list came down Sunday after it was posted last week and included dozens of cities and counties across 37 states and the District of Columbia that the department says refuses to assist federal immigration authorities. The list received significant pushback from local officials, including mayors and law enforcement, early in person. Voting begins Tuesday in New Jersey's primary election for governor. Ahead of next week's primary, Election Day. Five candidates make up the Republican field, with President Trump endorsing Jack Cittarelli, who has said he would end any sanctuary policies for immigrants in the country illegally. Six candidates make up the Democratic field. This is NPR News.

Detailed Summary of NPR News Now – June 3, 2025
NPR News Now, hosted by Giles Snyder, delivered a comprehensive update on the latest national and international events in its June 3, 2025, episode. This summary encapsulates the key topics discussed, enriched with notable quotes and structured sections for clarity.
Incident Overview
Authorities in Boulder, Colorado, reported an increase in injuries from a Molotov cocktail attack that occurred on Sunday. Initially, several individuals sustained injuries, and the number rose to twelve as four more victims with minor injuries were admitted to hospitals.
Legal Proceedings
The suspect behind the attack made his first court appearance on Monday. According to Giles Snyder, “Authorities in Boulder, Colorado, say the number of those injured in Sunday's Molotov cocktail attack has risen to 12” [00:18]. The accused is facing severe federal charges, including hate crimes, due to the premeditated nature of the attack. Additionally, local authorities have filed 42 charges against him, ranging from attempted murder to possession of an incendiary device. He is currently held on a $10 million bond.
Motivation and Intent
Police investigations revealed that the attacker resorted to using Molotov cocktails after failing to purchase a firearm legally. This motive adds a complex layer to the case, highlighting issues surrounding firearm accessibility and extremist actions.
Court Decision
The Supreme Court has opted not to review challenges against Maryland and Rhode Island's state laws banning semi-automatic weapons such as the AR-15 and AK-47. This decision effectively upholds the lower courts' rulings supporting these bans.
Justice Opinions
Nina Totenberg reported that the court requires four justices to grant a review, but only three conservative justices showed interest: Justices Thomas, Alito, and Gorsuch [01:32]. Justice Brett Kavanaugh did not provide the necessary fourth vote but issued a statement questioning the lower court's decision. “He gave no reason why he voted against hearing the case, except to say that there will be other similar cases before the court soon” [01:32].
Implications
This decision leaves the door open for future cases that may influence the Court's stance on firearm regulations, potentially shaping national gun policy for years to come.
Peace Negotiations
The latest round of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine, held in Istanbul, failed to produce any significant progress toward a ceasefire. Despite the impasse, both nations agreed to exchange the remains of war dead and facilitate the repatriation of seriously wounded soldiers under the age of 25.
Military Engagements
Joanna Kakissis reported that Ukraine claimed to have downed over 40 Russian warplanes deep within Russian territory [02:34]. The operation, named "Spiderweb," involved sophisticated tactics where drones were concealed within wooden cabins on trucks, later released to target Russian bombers. Lt. Gen. Vassal Malyuk stated, “Our strikes will continue as long as Russia terrorizes Ukrainians with missiles and shahed drones” [02:34].
Russian Response
While Russia acknowledged the destruction of some bombers, it disputed the scale of the losses reported by Ukraine. The ongoing conflict remains intense, with both sides sustaining significant casualties and equipment losses.
Recall Details
A significant recall was announced affecting Ford, Volkswagen, Volvo, and Chrysler vehicles due to malfunctions in the rear view cameras, a safety feature mandated in all new U.S. cars since 2018. Over a million Ford vehicles manufactured in the past four years are impacted by a software error that may cause the camera images to freeze or delay [03:33].
Affected Models and Fixes
Camila Domonoski detailed that Volvo owners have reported missing images, while some Chrysler Ram Promasters and newer Volkswagen SUVs are experiencing distorted rear view visuals. The recommended remedy varies from simple software updates to more extensive dealership visits. Importantly, all repairs are offered at no cost to the vehicle owners. Drivers can verify if their cars are subject to the recall via the government's Safer Car App [03:33].
Safety Implications
Rear view cameras are critical for preventing accidents during reversing maneuvers. These defects pose significant safety risks, necessitating prompt action from manufacturers and compliance from vehicle owners.
Policy Reversal
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has retracted a previously published list of sanctuary jurisdictions, which included numerous cities and counties across 37 states and the District of Columbia. This decision follows substantial backlash from local officials, including mayors and law enforcement agencies, who opposed being labeled as non-cooperative with federal immigration authorities [04:07].
Political Landscape
In related news, New Jersey is gearing up for its primary governor election, set to begin voting on Tuesday. The Republican field comprises five candidates, with former President Donald Trump endorsing Jack Cittarelli. Cittarelli has committed to ending sanctuary policies for undocumented immigrants. On the Democratic side, six candidates are vying for the nomination, although specifics were not detailed in the transcript [04:07].
Implications
The removal of the sanctuary jurisdictions list reflects the dynamic tensions between federal immigration policies and local governance. Additionally, the upcoming New Jersey primary could influence the broader national discourse on immigration and governance.
Conclusion
The June 3, 2025, episode of NPR News Now provided listeners with urgent updates on domestic incidents, significant legal decisions, ongoing international conflicts, consumer safety issues, and evolving immigration policies. Through detailed reporting and inclusion of authoritative quotes, the episode offered a nuanced understanding of the multifaceted issues shaping current events.
