Live from NPR News, I'm dale Willman. Some 300 National Guard troops were in Los Angeles Sunday to help police monitor demonstrators who were protesting the government's immigration actions this weekend that's led to more than 100 detentions of immigrants. President Trump ordered the Guard into the city, and Sunday night he was asked by reporters what bar had to be reached before doing so.
Donald Trump
The bar is what I think it is. I mean, if we see danger to our country and to our citizens, we'll be very, very strong in terms of law and order. It's about law and order.

A confrontation broke out Sunday in front of the Metropolitan Detention center in downtown LA as some demonstrators shouted insults at guard members standing behind plastic riot shields. Tear gas and flashbangs were used in an effort to control the crowd. Talking about the three days of protests, Trump seemed to ratchet up the rhetoric.
Donald Trump
When they spit at people, you know they spit. That's their new thing. They spit and worse, you know what they throw at them, right? And when that happens, I have a little statement. They say they spit, we hit.

Trump also alluded to possibly deploying more troops to other cities. The 78th annual Tony Awards, which are Broadway's highest honors, were handed out at Radio City Music hall on Sunday evening. Reporter Jeff London says a tiny musical was the night's biggest winner.

Maybe Happy Ending, an original musical developed in South Korea about two retired robots who fall in love, won six awards, including best musical. It has a cast of four. Never Fly Away, Little Robot, Best revival of a musical went to a reimagined Sunset Boulevard. It took two other awards, including one for star Nicole Scherzinger. Brandon Jacobs Jenkins play Purpose, about a family of civil rights activists, was named best play. And Jonathan Spector's Eureka Day, which looks at a measles outbreak in an elementary school, was named best revival of a play. For NPR News, I'm Jeff London in New York.

The Israeli army says it's retrieved and identified the body of Mohammed Sinwar, who was the military chief of Hamas. The recovery came three weeks after his death was announced. The BBC's David Bamford has more on that story.
David Bamford
An Israeli army statement said DNA checks confirmed a body retrieved from a tunnel underneath the European hospital in Khan Younis was that of Muhammad Sinwar. The Israelis say the body of Mohammed Shabana, the commander of the Hamas Rafah Brigade, was also found at the scene. They died, Israel says, in a military operation on May 13. Mohammed Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar killed by Israel last year. He'd been accused by Israel of masterminding the October 2023 attack on Israel that triggered the war in Gaza.

That's the BBC's David Bamford. And this is NPR News. Trade talks between the US And China are expected to get underway Monday in London. Both sides had agreed last month to a 90 day suspension of most of the tariffs they had imposed on each other. But both sides have since exchanged angry words over advanced semiconductors, rare earth minerals and visas for Chinese students hoping to study in the US Carlos Alcaraz has won the French Open men's singles title for for a second straight year. And as NPR's Jeff Brady reports, it was the longest French Open final ever. It lasted five hours and 29 minutes.

It was a dramatic day at the French Open in Paris. Carlos Alcaraz of Spain beat Italian Yannick Sinner, rallying from two sets down and saving three match points. Upon winning, Alcaraz let go of his racket, dropped back on the famous red clay court and covered his face as the crowd cheered. Then he got up to receive congratulations and an embrace from his 23 year old opponent. This is Alcaraz's fifth win in the Grand Slam tournament, and tennis watchers consider it one of the greatest comebacks in the tournament's history, comparing the two young men to some of the most decorated tennis stars at 22 years old. This is the 20th title of Alcaraz's career. Jeff Brady, NPR News.
