California Governor Gavin Newsom says he plans to sue the Trump administration for deploying members of the National Guard. In Los Angeles, the governor and LA's Mayor Karen Bass have called their deployment inflammatory. President Trump's ban on people from 12 countries traveling to the US and entry restrictions on those from seven others went into effect today. Those countries under the full ban include Afghanistan, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia and Yemen. The those under restrictions include Cuba, Sierra Leone and Venezuela. The White House says the changes were prompted by national security concerns, including potential terror attacks. The president says some of the countries have deficient screening for issuing passports. Iran's Foreign Ministry says Tehran will soon present a counter proposal to the US in nuclear talks between the two countries. Iran has rejected the latest offer from the Trump administration. Iran's foreign minister is warning the US and other Western countries not to back a censure resolution against tehran when the UN's nuclear watchdog meets today. The BBC's Bethany Bell has more from Vienna, the home of the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Bethany Bell
The resolution, if passed, would accuse Iran of being in non compliance for the first time in almost 20 years. It would also carry the threat of an eventual referral to to the UN Security Council. It follows a report from the IAEA last week, which cited a general lack of cooperation from Iran and raised concerns over secret atomic work and undeclared nuclear material in areas which have long been under investigation.

That's the BBC's Bethany Bell. Later today, Tropical Storm Barbara is expected to strengthen into a hurricane off Mexico's Pacific coast. This is NPR News. Broadway honored its best last night at this year's Tony Awards. As Jeff London reports, veterans and newcomers shared in the awards given out at Radio City Music hall in New York.

The big question was, would 11 time Tony nominee Audra McDonald bring another statue home for her role in Gypsy or would it go to Broadway first timer Nicole Scherzinger for Sunset Boulevard. Nicole Scherzinger in the best actor in a play category. Cola Scola, another Broadway first timer, won for playing Mary Todd Lincoln in their self described stupid comedy oh, Mary. Julie Harris has a Tony for playing Mary Todd Lincoln. Another Broadway rookie, Sarah Snook from Succession, won best actress in a play portraying 26 roles in the Picture of Dorian Gray. And Darren Criss, who's been on Broadway several times, won best actor in a musical for maybe happy Ending. For NPR News, I'm Jeff London in New York.
