Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. In Los Angeles, a fourth day of protests against the Trump administration's immigration crackdown.
Protesters
We are the people, mighty, mighty people.
Giles Snyder
Demonstrators again on the streets amid a heavy police presence, especially in spots where confrontations between police and demonstrators have been taking place. Meanwhile, California Attorney General Rob Bonta is calling President Trump's deployment of National Guard troops and some 700 active duty marines unlawful. He's suing the Trump administration over the move and spoke to NPR in an interview conducted for Morning Edition.
Rob Bonta
Having the Marines brought in in addition to the National Guard being brought in is only unfortunately inflaming the situation, creating additional tension and provocation. Meanwhile, the National Guard troops are being pulled away from their duties to tackle wildfires and prevent fentanyl from flowing into California, important duties that they are now no longer doing while they are unnecessarily in Los Angeles.
Giles Snyder
Fonta says the deployments trample on California's sovereignty. President Trump has authorized the deployment of an additional 2,000 National Guard members to LA. It appears to be the first time in decades that a state's National Guard has been activated without a request from that state's governor. Meanwhile, Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is challenging President Trump to have him arrested following remarks from Trump's border czar, Tom Holman. Holman said Newman Newsom rather should be arrested over possible obstruction. He later spoke to cnn.
Tom Holman
When they cross that line, we'll seek prosecution. And last count, we have just about 50 protesters who've been arrested currently being prosecuted for filing. And when I asked me would that include politicians like Mayor Bass or Governor Moussa, of course it includes anybody.

The CEOs who run America's companies and employ many of its people are trying to manage all the uncertainty created by President Trump's tariffs and other economic policies. NPR's Maria Aspen reports that business leaders are now cycling through the five stages of tariff grief.
Maria Aspen
It started with denial. As President Trump first announced some of his tariffs, CEO confidence soared to a three year high, but now it's plummeted in its worst drop in half a century. According to the conference board. Some CEOs have moved on to anger and depression, while others are trying to encourage the administration to do more bargaining with trade partners. Jamie Dimon runs JPMorgan Chase.

I would engage with China. You know, I just got back from China last week. They're not scared, folks.

Meanwhile, some of Wall Street's top economists are warning that the US Is at an elevated risk of a recession, meaning that we all might need to practice acceptance of an economic downturn. Maria Aspen, NPR News, New York.
