Live from NPR News, I'm Giles Snyder. As protests intensify, President Trump is sending thousands more troops to Los Angeles. NPR's Franco Ordonez reports. A move comes as the state of California attempts to block the deployment.

President Trump has authorized an additional 2,000 National Guard members to report to Los Angeles just hours after the administration mobilized 700 Marines to join them. The move comes as California officials filed suit charging the Trump administration with violating the state's sovereignty. Since Governor Gavin Newsom did not request the troops, Newsom called the deployment illegal and immoral. State officials said it would only stoke emotions and increase tensions. The latest federal mobilization is in addition to the 2000 National Guard troops that Trump has already deployed to crack down on protesters, who he described as professional agitators and insurrectionists. Protests against the immigration crackdown have spread beyond Los Angeles. Demonstrators have also been on the streets in cities including New York, Philadelphia and San Francisco. In Austin, Texas, police clashed Monday evening with several hundred people at the state Capitol. Police used tear gas and pepper spray to disperse them. Local media reporting that several demonstrators were arrested. Attorney General Pam Bondi says the Justice Department will move aggressively against protesters who engage in violence and destruction.

You can run, you can't hide. We are coming after you federally. If you assault a police officer, if you rob a store, if you loot, if you smoke, spit on a police officer, we're coming after you.

Attorney General Bondi speaking on Fox News Monday evening. She said authorities have identified a suspect wanted for injuring a police officer while throwing broken pieces of cinder blocks at law enforcement. The FBI has been offering a $50,000 reward leading to the suspect's identification and arrest. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. Replacing every member of a key government committee that helped set vaccine policy. NPR's Will Stone reports.
Will Stone (2:30)
Kennedy is removing all 17 sitting members of the Advisory Committee for Immunization Practices, which provides advice and guidance to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In his role as secretary of health, Kennedy oversees the cdc. In a press release, Kennedy said this was, quote, necessary to re establish public confidence in vaccine science, unquote. He pointed out that all 17 members were appointed by the Biden administration. Kennedy has previously raised concerns about conflicts of interest. However, the committee's ethics rules require members to disclose conflicts of interest and themselves if they have one. In response, the American Medical association said Kennedy's decision undermines, quote, trust and upends a transparent process that has saved countless lives. Will Stone, NPR News.
